Jones, Barney Concannon, John O'Neill - guessed circa 1953 Crash site of 112 Sqn Vampire FB5 VZ115 in the overshoot at Jever.   During a practice for an impending visit by HRH The Duke of Edinburgh the engine failed when in the circuit at Jever.   The pilot, Fg. Off. Ray Hancock, misjudged his approach to a forced landing on the airfield and passed the runway caravan, going the wrong way, at about 200 knots.   The aircraft disintegrated and and Ray was lucky to escape with little more than a broken arm. - 17Mar53. John Beaumont of 112 Squadron fishing in a lake next to the airfield.   I never realised that there were lakes so close to the boundary.   Marcus Christ has just sent me details of the sale of the GAF Jever Married Quarters.   Below is one of the maps contained in the pack and it shows lakes just west of the quarters and the athletics track underneath the shaft of the red arrow.   I presume that the buildings in the background of the photograph are the MT Yard buildings. Johnny Fox of 112 Squadron who introduced John Beaumont to fishing in these lakes next to the airfield.   It looks like the back of a row of Warrant Officers' Married Quarters through the trees.   Apparently one called at the house of the German gentleman who owned the lakes and he allowed them to fish.   John Beaumont can't remember any charges.   I wonder if anyone else used them over the next 7 years? John Beaumont denies that this is what they were fishing for - he says they were non-cooperative!   John only went during the week but thinks it may have been a picnic centre at weekends.   The German owner allowed the use of the boat. John Beaumont using the owner's boat for some lake fishing - 1953.   John says that there were Roach in the lake, in fact, he caught one and it was immediately taken by a Pike while still on the end of his line.   So he re-baited with another small Roach and actually caught the Pike.
