Personalised mug supplied freely by the local brewery for every officer at RAF Jever and held behind the bar.   Philip Westwell tells us the story behind them:   "I arrived at Jever, following the usual drag by rail, at about 4 pm. on 24Sep53, in need of liquid refreshment.   The Mess was deserted except for one fellow (named Wolfgang, whom I later learned was the chief barman) who was busy unpacking a number of crates.   He explained that the crates contained a tankard for each officer, all supplied by the brewery.   He apologised that there would not be one for me, and instantly offered to contact the brewery for an additional tankard.   I was certainly surprised by his gesture, and a couple of weeks later, took delivery of same.   As you know, RAF Jever became operational during summer 1952.   In summer 1953, a local brewery (not Jever Pilsner) offered to present a handsome tankard to each officer based at the station.   Accordingly, names with rank were collected and Wolfgang was responsible for liaison with the brewery.   After delivery, the tankards (many scores in number) were soon neatly arranged on shelves behind the bar, and Wolfgang and his colleagues would serve orders duly contained in the appropriate tankard.   Each one bore the name and rank of the officer, the brewery emblem (blue and red in colour, I think) and "RAF JEVER" below.   When I was posted to Oldenburg in summer 1954, the tankard went with me, of course.   Attached is a photo of my tankard.   It is quality glassware, capacity 0.5 litre and hand-painted.   It is slightly different from the bulk order in that the brewery emblem is missing."   (Thanks to Philip Westwell)
