Station Commander's Weekly Parade

Ken Senar writes:-

As Flying Wing Adjutant I used to stand in as Parade Adjutant on Saturday mornings when Les Knell was away.   With 4 flying squadrons, 2 Regiment squadrons, and Tech and Admin wings as support squadrons the parades were a massive affair.

After 'falling in the officers' and, as per ritual, being told, by squadrons, the number of men and officers each had on parade, I had to wait for the Station Commander Tom Prickett's car to arrive.   By this time, I had still been unable to add up the numbers (I couldn't add up two columns of figures mentally under those circumstances), so made an inspired assessment.

On handing over the parade to the Station Commander I announced to him, as required, the numbers of personnel on parade, to which he replied in low voice and with a twinkle in his eye "You bloody liar Pod, you've got that wrong!"

I had to buy him a drink in the Mess that lunch time.   I leaned how to shout then, and can still shout now without going falsetto.
