APPENDIX 'B' TO JEVER WING
STANDARD OPERATIONAL PROCEDURES.
TACTICAL SNAKE DESCENT.
1. This is a straight descent in fours or pairs through a layer of
cloud under which there is good visibility.
2. After obtaining a fix or by using D.M.E. the formation is to calculate
their descent so that they arrive below cloud at a point 5 - 10 miles
out from the runway, and that when descending through 25,000 feet to
20,000 feet they are inside the Jever M.T.M.A. This can be done by using
the 1 in 60 rule with steers from base and laying off. As a guide at
.8/350 kts 1 mile is used for every 1000 feet with 6500 r.p.m. and dive
brake out.
3. If the cloud is more than a very thin layer the leader is to space
the sub-section at 2500 yards line astern. The leader will call when
descending giving hie speed and course, these orders will be followed
by the sub-section leader 10 seconds later. Any course or speed changes
will be similarly followed after a 10 second delay during the descent.
Procedure Below Cloud.
When the leader breaks the cloud he will announce the cloud base.
Depending upon visibility etc., the leader will instruct his sub-section
leader to either join up or continue individual homings to base.
