Sad News learnt from Maurice Parker and the above clipping from Wilhelmshaven Zeitung 31st May 2013.

Now history: Fighter/Bomber Wing 38 'Friesland' that was once stationed at GAF Jever.   This photo show a Tornado in special paint finish on the occasion of its disbandment in May 2005.

Peace to return for good in the Jever Forest   Luftwaffe. Airfield to be declassified - New possibilities for Schortens.   Jever - As already reported last year, flying at GAF Jever will come to an end on the 30th September of this year.   It has now been confirmed that nearly 80 years after construction started in the 1930s the airfield will be closed for good.   Never again will a military aircraft land or take-off from there.   The Chief of Air Staff, Lieutenant General Karl Müllner has recently applied for a declassification of the airfield.   This confirmed W/O Peter Meenen, PR Officer of the GAF Regiment 'Friesland' that is stationed at GAF Jever.   The Luftwaffe no longer see any necessity to retain the station as a military airfield.   Colonal Hans Peter Dorfmüller, CO of the GAF Regiment rated the decision as a logical consequence of the reorganization of the Bundeswehr.   This will see a build-up of personnel at GAF Jever from approximately 1,650 at present to a total of about 2,050.   Units of the Regiment that are at the moment stationed elsewhere will be moved to Jever.   A large airfield with restrictions to its use in the central area is somewhat of a hinderance when trying to accomplish the required infrastructure.

Schortens' Mayor Böhling welcomes the declassification of the airfield

The airfield at the moment is being used as a diversion base for the Fighter Wing 71 'Richthofen' at GAF Wittmund.   If required they could divert to Laage near Rostock or Nörvenich, or even to the neighbouring Netherlands.   Flying operations by the 21 MU stationed on the airfield will be wound up by the end of September.   Up to this date all Phantom and Tornado aircraft that still require dismantling or scraping by the MU will have then landed.   The MU itself will be disbanded in 2014.   A declassification of the airfield will require the runway beacons to be removed and naturally there will be no more aircraft noise in the future.   Above all, the restrictions due to aircraft noise, such as the noise protection zones, will no longer apply.   Gerhard Böhling, Mayor of Schortens, said: 'This will give the town excellent development possibilities' and 'I am extremely satisfied with the development of our Bundeswehr garrison.   On the one side, station personnel will increase and on the other the town will have new options to develop.'   Böhling: 'It could not be better for us'   (Thanks to Maurice Parker.)
