                           PART 1II-HANDLING

        (ii) Check and set:-

              Altitude Below 15,000 ft.
              Airspeed To give 1,000-1,200 r.p.m.
              L.P. cock On
              L.P. pump circuit In
                breaker
              Throttle One-third open
              H.P. cock OFF

Press the relight button and after five seconds, set the
H.P. cock on, keeping the relight button pressed.
When r.p.m. reach 2,000, release the relight button
and close the throttle fully. When the engine is run-
ning satisfactorily at normal j.p.t., open up to the
              desired r.p.m.

(iii) If an engine fails to relight within 30 seconds, close
the H.P. cock. The next attempt should be made at a
lower altitude and a wider throttle opening. At least
one minute should elapse between attempts to re-
light, to allow the engine to dry out.

(iv) No attempt should be made to relight the engine
              using the normal starter button.

    (b) Derwent Mk.9

         (i) Derwent Mk. 9 engines may be relit at heights up to
              25,000 ft.

(ii) Up to 20,000 ft. there is no practical limit to the air-
speed at which relighting may be attempted.

(iii) Between 20,000 ft. and 25,000 ft., relighting is more
likely to be successful if the airspeed does not exceed
              230 knots.

(iv) Unsuccessful attempts to relight at high altitudes
should not jeopardise the chances of a successful
              relight at lower altitudes.

         (v) Check and set:-

              Throttle Closed
              H.P. cock OFF
              L.P. cock On
              R.p.m. Steady
