Porterhouse Steak I could ever have wished for. Sunday was a lazy morning, necessarily so, because I awoke with a violent headache for no attributable reason. I walked it off after a late breakfast, had lunch in a café and, later in the afternoon, we caught a train to make our way back to Wunstorf.
1px-trans.gif, 43 bytesIt so happened that we did go on a low level strafing run again, to Jever, but with proper authority. This was to give those left behind, while the runway work was being done, a morale boost and to let them know we hadn't forgotten them. The main purpose, though, was to act as potential targets for the RAF Regiment Light Ack Ack Squadron for practice and to test their gun crews.
1px-trans.gif, 43 bytesThere was the usual run of flying training and GCA practices during the rest of our stay. We also did air-to-ground firing, using Ströhen Range. It was a fiendishly difficult place to find, situated as it was, in open marshy countryside with no obvious nearby landmarks. I flew on Battle Flight duty just once, for a miserable 15 minutes.
1px-trans.gif, 43 bytesOn the final Tuesday night of the detachment we threw an all-ranks party in the NAAFI Club on the shores of the Steinhuder Meer. None of us was sorry that this was marking the end of our stay.
1px-trans.gif, 43 bytesI flew a total of 13 hours and 15 minutes, including 1 hour 50 minutes IF, whilst at Wunstorf. Not a good total. I did not return to Jever by road as expected, but flew back, returning 'home' to our usual much better living conditions on November 15th.
