Another 12 months have trundled by and once again the second Saturday
appears just around the corner. Our landlord of the "Three Compasses" confirmed that we can have an
exclusive booking of his premises on Saturday, 11th January, 1997, for the annual format. Please note the
as I have just realised that in last year's letter I signed off by stating it would be on 12th Jan.
I do apologise and believe it has something to do with '96 being a Leap Year. Trust you
will all have noticed the deliberate mistake before I did.
The routine this year - our fortieth - for the AGM will be as for last
year with the doors opening at 18.30 hrs and an extension to 23.59 hrs. Pub grub, generously laced with
dingleberries and limpopo flavoured Pils will be available from 20.00 hrs onwards. Kitty will be £15.
Despite it being our fortieth anniversary, business will be conducted usual but it is hoped that the number
attending will be increased markedly. Last year's attendance was well down from the norm and we have thank an
excellent turn-out from the "Outer Baskets" who, with much spirited song, helped the evening along. Could I
ask you all this year to peruse the address list attached and identify a near neighbour who you can give a
lift to, accompany them by rail or, for the most elderly, share a Zimmer frame. Perhaps those of you who
are tending to drift into a 2 year attendance format could use 97 as your datum. This way we could reserve
the even years for the true blue hard core and the odd years for the larger gatherings. It would certainly
be most gratifying to get everybody together this year. If all those of you that have attended over the last few
years were to turn up together it could be quite an evening. We still aim to break the 50 barrier.

The "Golden Share" award this year was presented to Terry and Jean of the "Three Compasses"
in recognition of their patience in catering for our varied needs over the years. As always we also need to
record our thanks to Peter Baines who once again is managing all our photocopying and postal requirements. We would be a bit
lost without it so thank you, Peter.
For the second year running I am delighted not to have to pass on any sad news to you.
It must be the "Pils" so why not put a marker down for your annual immunisation on the 11th.
To mark our fortieth in a slightly more formal way I would like to float the idea of
organising a Ladies Dining-In, say one Saturday in May. The aim would be to see if we could use the
facilities of an existing Officers' Mess and accommodation if available. If not then external accommodation could be
arranged in the form of Travel Lodges etc. I appreciate that being able to find suitable facilities will
not be easy, especially with so many units now closed. However, on the basis of nothing ventured, nothing
gained, if the required support is there I am willing to give it a go. If the facilities were suitable we
could perhaps start the evening with an informal happy hour plus a barbeque on the Friday evening before the Saturday night.
I appreciate that at this early stage any indication of your support would have to
contain many caveats such as exact date, cost and location. Given the option we would be aiming for a
location reasonably central and adjacent to both road and rail trunk routes. Since there will need to be
a certain degree of commitment to organise the event it will require a reasonable response in terms of general support
before proceeding further. In this respect I would be grateful if you could complete and return the attached
questionnaire as soon as possible - preferably before the 11th. I would also be grateful if you could
indicate whether or not you will be able to attend the AGM.
As usual I am also enclosing the updated version of the Basket and Outer Basket list and as always would welcome any amendments/alterations.
Finally, may I wish you all a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. I look
forward to seeing you at "Steaming Time" (18.30). For those not able to make it this year, next year
(1998) will be on 10th January, same time, same place - see you there. Should any of this change, be
assured you will be advised in good time.
