17 Apr 10
(Date had to be moved forward from 24th due to clash with London Marathon)

RAF CLUB

128 Piccadilly, London, W1J 7PY.
(100 yards E of Hyde Park Corner tube or 600 yds W of Green Park- Both Piccadilly Line).

1.   A note to outline arrangements for the AGM to be held in the RAF Club on the 17th April 2009 and to report the minutes of the 2009 AGM.   The original date for 2010 has been changed from the 24th to the 17th because the first coincided with the London Marathon resulting in both accommodation and food arrangements becoming complicated and not as we wished.

2.   Last year’s AGM was held in the RAF Club for the first time.   It was a great success with 44 attendees, of which, about 30 opted for the Club food. Some felt the food was expensive for such simple fare and after negotiations with the Club Mick has obtained a better deal for us this year.

3.   The sad news of departures reported the loss of Fergie Ferguson just before last year’s AGM in April 2009.   We also lost a Station Commander, Air Chief Marshal Sir Tom Prickett in January of this year – he was our Founder.   Three Squadron Commanders passed away in the last twelve months, two were former COs of 98 Sqn – John Smith-Carington in June and our dear friend, Dougie Adamson in August, an original Steam Laundry Board Member who never missed an AGM.   The third CO was Arthur Asker of 118 Sqn who passed away last month.   We also lost Tony Pearce of 4 Sqn, another regular attendee, in January 2010. Just as we go to press we have learnt that Dennis Fahey of 93 and 2 Sqn, has just passed away in New Zealand opn 4Mar10.

4.   On the lighter side we had two unique reunions during the past year.   Firstly five shareholders met for lunch at Dirty Dick’s on 12Feb10.   This is now a Younger’s pub and has been restored to nearly its old style.   ‘Elf an Savety have insisted that the dead cats and the pinned up bank notes are consigned to a glass case but the decor is very familiar.   This reunion was over lunch on a Friday and was very pleasant with excellent food.   The second event was a Block 40 Breakout held at the Union Jack Club on Saturday 27Feb10.   This was a gathering of 14 ex-members of 101 Signals Unit who served at Brockzetel but lived in Block 40 at Jever.   The Union Jack Club was most impressive and very inexpensive.   It is conveniently situated by Waterloo Station and has been completely rebuilt from the early days and is now like a 5 star hotel.

5.   I have repeated toward the end of the calling note the accommodation arrangements both for the Club and alternative accommodation, just to jog your memory if you are pondering what to do about a night stop and have binned my last year’s information.

6.   Mick is delighted to report that the RAF Club have come up trumps in meeting our request for food for 2010.   They have thought again about the problems of supplying hot food from the Running Horse, which is two floors lower.   They are now offering us a choice of one of the following four hot dishes:

1.   Steak Kidney and Mushroom Pie with Roast Potatoes & Vegetables.

2.   Chicken Curry with Rice.

3.   Sausage & Mash.

4.   Grilled Minute Steak & Chips.

Any of these at a standard price of £12.50 each a marvellous price compared with last year!

7.   Attendees do not have to have anything to eat but for those who would like something we are asked to pre-order to help with the logistics of serving it upstairs.   Mick has said we would be happy to take delivery as the meals are prepared but if we let them know which dishes we want they will endeavour to serve them all fairly close together, if not at the same time.

8.   When you send back your reply to our Calling Notice please let us know what you or your party choose.   Please pay for it on the night. If you are staying at the Club give your room number and it will be charged to your account.

ACCOMMODATION

9.   Mick still has 3 rooms reserved for anyone who wishes to stay, (you do not have to be a member), just let Mick know what type of room you would like.

10.  The costs are as follows:

     Single room                   £58.50

     Double room                  £99.50

     Double Superior room     £113.50

11.  I offer the following suggestions for those who may make a late decision to come and may not be able to gain a room in the Club.

Alternative Accommodation

12.  Where web sites exist, I leave those of you on the net to look up the details. I have included some basic information on the accommodation for those not on the net so you will be able to contact the organisation of your choice.

13.  Caledonian Club.   The RAF Club has reciprocal arrangements with other clubs both in UK and overseas for RAF Club members only.   The Caledonian Club is one of them and is within easy walking distance of the Club, being at 9 Halkin Street Belgravia.   The telephone number is: 020 7235 51662 – however, do not deal direct with the Caledonian in the first instance.   I suggest you do that through Mick to avoid any booking cockups.   I have included the number so if you are accommodated there you can contact the Caledonian about your personal arrangements.   I have no order of costs but I would imagine they would be about the same as the RAF Club.

14.  Direct Hotels London – www.Hotels.com.   Modestly calls itself the most popular Hotels website for cheap hotels in London.   I suggest that if you are not on the net you ask a relative of friend who is, if you can call and see the website.   It would be easy for the person to book online for you.   There is a map showing where the hotels are. Prices vary according to the 'Star' rating.   If you make a sudden late decision to attend call on 0871-200-01718.

15.  Victory Services Club - www.vsc.co.uk.   The Victory Services Club is a Tri-Service, All Ranks Members' Club for currently serving and retired members of the Armed Forces, ideally located at Marble Arch in the heart of London's West End.   You will need to join (Single membership is £20 per annum through varying other categories to the most expensive Family [joint] £45 per annum).

16.  Even if you are not coming to the AGM, it is worth noting that parents or children of serving or ex-service personnel can join in their own right under one of the membership categories, even though they have not been in any of the armed services. So if you or one of you family take grandchildren (or in our family more accurately termed 'domestic terrorists') to London for treats just once a year you will more than likely break even.   Two visits and you are in the money.    Costs vary: a single room, including breakfast, is £39.50.and at the other end of the scale, a family room en suite with 2 adults plus 1 sprog is £144.50.   If you are not on the net, I suggest you do as I suggested above and ask a relative or friend who is to let you see the website.   You can then do a virtual tour.   It's a really good deal.   Telephone 020-7616-8302.

17.  I hope this information was useful.

PLEASE WILL YOU FILL IN THE ATTACHED FORM AND SEND IT TO MICK

I have the honour to be
Your Almost Obedient Chairman
