Exercise Brown Jug 4 Sqn Schleswig - Sep57. In the Exercise, the Royal Danish Air Force were the attackers. Bill Maish spotted a pair of RDAF F-84Fs and the lead aircraft broke left. Assuming that they had spotted him, Bill latched on to the number 2 and produced this perfect piece of tracking. It is a frame taken from the cinegun film.
After breaking off he found that neither of them had seen him but he had filmed them as they broke in to the circuit over their base camp! Bill, as a PAI, tells me that the tracking is good but the ranging is not quite correct. The pipper was tracked by flying the aircraft and the size of the circle of pips adjusted by twisting the Hunter throttle grip. The circle made by the inside of the pippers should just enclose the wing span of the target aircraft. If, as in this case, the pipper circle is larger than the wingspan then the gyro gunsight is being told that the aircraft is closer than it really is. The bullets would therefore not be aimed far enough ahead of the target and would fall behind the aiming point. (Thanks Bill Maish).
