Tuesday April 1st - Thursday April 3rd, 1958
A varied flying programme started this month. High
and low level battle formations, cine and continuation exercises were flown in fine cold weather.
The Squadron stood down at mid-day on Thursday for the Easter Grant. |

Tuesday April 8th - Saturday April 10th, 1958
Tuesday provided a full day of high level battle
formations, cine exercises, and night cross countries. Wednesday morning was devoted to air-
to-ground firing on Strohen range, despite frequent snow showers.

Highest Score - Flt. Lt. Carver & Fg. Off. Thomson - 43%
More air-to-ground firing was scheduled for Thursday but bad weather at Strohen range
necessitated a change to high level battle formations and cine exercises, a full day
thus being attained. Night flying was also carried out consisting of high level cross
countries. Air to ground firing was once again on the programme for Friday but
continued bad weather prevented this until the afternoon when some sorties were completed.

Flt. Lt C Taylor started practising low level aerobatics for the coming competition
to decide the 2nd T.A.F. individual aerobatics representative. |

Wednesday April 14th - Saturday April 19th 1958
High level battle formations and cine exercises
were flown on Monday. Fg. Off. S.J. Howard aborted a take-off and ended up in the overshoot with
no damage to the aircraft. Practice battle call on Tuesday resulted in all crews
and aircraft being brought to readiness in time but no flying was carried out because
of bad weather. Flying started at noon when four interceptions were carried out, also
high and low level continuation exercises. Low serviceability on Wednesday allowed
only four continuation and two low level sorties and two instrument flying sorties.
One serviceable aircraft was available on Thursday and only one sortie was flown.
Two lectures were attended by the pilots, one on Air Force Law and the other on fire
fighting and fire extinguishers. Air to Ground flying on Friday resulted in seven
sorties being completed.

The remainder of the day was devoted to high level battle formation, low level sorties,
cine exercises, instrument flying practice and general continuation training.
No flying was carried out on Saturday. |

Monday April 21st - Sunday April 27th 1958
High level battle formations and individual sorties
were flown in good weather on Monday. The Squadron started a week of battle flight on Tuesday.
Flying started at noon on Tuesday, the morning being taken up by parades. Wednesday morning
found only four aircraft available for battle flight and only two sorties were flown, one by Sqn. Ldr. H.
Minnis, a trial flight over the route for the A.O.C.s fly past, and a further display by Flt. Lt. C. Taylor.
Thursday was an excellent flying day when no sorties were lost for any reason. Friday morning
was also good but flying ceased in the afternoon due to falling serviceability. The Squadron stood
by at readiness over the weekend and on Saturday morning were given another lecture on fire
fighting. |

Monday April 28th - Wednesday April 30th, 1958
Battle flight continued on Monday when most
sorties were completed. The Squadron moved into dispersal on Tuesday and found that air
traffic, also in dispersal, was not in operation. Thus the morning was lost as also was the
afternoon which was devoted to parades. After a late start, due once again to lack of
communications, high and low level battle formations were flown.

OPERATIONAL
1. This month the Squadron flew 296.50 hrs. Hunter and 20.25 hrs
Vampire TX1. The weather factor for the month was good and aircraft
serviceability for the month was good apart from a few days
when some starter failures and engine changes occurred at the same time.
Easter and the distractions in the last week of the month put the target
just out of reach.
2. One weeks battle flight produced a large variety of targets and made
it most enjoyable battle flight period this year.
3. Normal training included battle formations, cine, night flying and
17 aircraft air to ground firing sorties for a score of 30.2% |
