The above report was submitted by Ken Goodwin and reads as
follows:
Sir,
Subject Heading :- ACCIDENT TO M.C. Ax00
1. I, No 238526 Rank Flt. Lt,. Name Goodwin Init. K.J.
Trade GD/P employed in the F.W.H.Q. R.A.F. JEVER,
have the honour to report the following :-
2. On Saturday 20 July, 1957 at approximately
1630 hours I started to drive the above
named motor cycle back to the M.T. Section
from the Officers Mess. Whilst travelling out
of the car park at no more than 10 m.p.h.
the front wheel struck a loose half brick.
This caused the machine to come out from
beneath me. Unfortunately, I was unable
to prevent it falling over as I was turning
at the time and the throttle friction nut
was in the tightened position. (The brick
had come apparently from the border trimming
of the Officers Mess gardens).
Then there was the report by the reliable independent witness:-
Sir,
Subject Heading :- ACCIDENT TO M.C. Ax00
1. I, No. 607376 Rank Flt. Lt. Name Edwards Init. R.A.
Trade GD/P employed in the No. 98 Squadron
of R.A.F. Jever have the honour to report the following:-
2. I was fortunate enough to be standing by the Officers' Mess
Car Park on the afternoon of Saturday 20th July 1957 at approximately
half past four, according to my watch, when I was attracted by
the sound of a motor cycle. The vehicle turned out to be
a service motor cycle and I espied one, Flt. Lt. Goodwin
driving it.
He appeared to be going surprisingly slowly when to
my utter amazement his front wheel came into violent contact
with a large brick, which someone had carelessly left
in the path. in spite of his immediate efforts to avoid
a disaster, the cycle crashed to the ground and a certain
amount of damage was at once apparent. It appeared
most unfortunate that he was negotiating a turn at the
time of impact because I am sure he would otherwise
have coped.
Judging from the amount of glass which littered
the road I suspected he had broken the headlamp.
He wheeled the motor cycle away.
