Avro Canada CF-100 Canuck

The CF-100, the largest fighter in the world at the time of its conception, was designed as a long-range night and all-weather interceptor to counter a Soviet air attack across the Arctic.   The prototype Avro Canada CF-100 Mk. 1 flew on 19 January 1950, an order for 124 production CF-100 Mk.3s being followed by further orders for 510 Mk. 4As and 4Bs, the latter having Orenda 11 engines.   Nine RCAF squadrons operated the type, providing round-the-clock air defence coverage as part of Canada's NATO commitment, and 53 examples of the last production version, the Mk 5, were delivered to Belgium.
