- Personalised mug supplied freely by the local brewery for every officer at RAF Jever and held behind the bar. Philip tells us the story behind them: "I arrived at Jever, following the usual drag by rail, at about 4 pm. on 24Sep53, in need of liquid refreshment. The Mess was deserted except for one fellow (named Wolfgang, whom I later learned was the chief barman) who was busy unpacking a number of crates. He explained that the crates contained a tankard for each officer, all supplied by the brewery. He apologised that there would not be one for me, and instantly offered to contact the brewery for an additional tankard. I was certainly surprised by his gesture, and a couple of weeks later, took delivery of same. As you know, RAF Jever became operational during summer 1952. In summer 1953, a local brewery (not Jever Pilsner) offered to present a handsome tankard to each officer based at the station. Accordingly, names with rank were collected and Wolfgang was responsible for liaison with the brewery. After delivery, the tankards (many scores in number) were soon neatly arranged on shelves behind the bar, and Wolfgang and his colleagues would serve orders duly contained in the appropriate tankard. Each one bore the name and rank of the officer, the brewery emblem (blue and red in colour, I think) and "RAF JEVER" below. When I was posted to Oldenburg in summer 1954, the tankard went with me, of course. Attached is a photo of my tankard. It is quality glassware, capacity 0.5 litre and hand-painted. It is slightly different from the bulk order in that the brewery emblem is missing."

- For those of you who were not brave enough to ignore the Station Standing Orders which forbade RAF Personnel from entering the St Annentor establishment in downtown Jever, here is a postcard advertising the attractions of the place. I presume that the dance floor with the square patterns is the notorious "Glass Dance Floor" so often mentioned. Just received a comment from Bob Platt: "This bar was, I think, known by the lads as the TK (tits and knickers). It was out of bounds but I went in once for a quick reccy. It had a glass dance floor with lights underneath. At the time there was no one in the place so I had a quick beer and left. Bob Platt (SAC instruments 2sqn 1960).

- Anglo-German Week Open Day Avon engine on display in Tech Wing for the Open Day on 19Jun57. There was some doubt as to whether this is the 1956 or 1957 Open Day. [Resolved as 57 - click to see]. In Jun57 4 and 93 Sqns had F.6s and 98 and 118 Sqns still had F.4s. However, the sign on the right corner looks like AVON 115, (I originally said 203), therefore it is from an F.4. As a result of this uncertainty Brian Thornton challenged me and said "It clearly has a cartridge starter assembly whereas the 203 had the Avpin starter and it has separate combustion chambers whereas the 203 had an annular combustion chamber." This prompted me to research pictures of both engines on the RAF Museum web site and I have added them below the main picture. On the left is the Avon 203 and on the right is the 100 series Avon. From the clearly separate combustion chambers and the fewer intake struts the displayed engine was a 115 Series from the Hunter F.4. Thank you Brian!
- Anglo-German Week Open Day Hunter F.4 on display in Tech Wing for the Open Day on 19Jun57?. There was some doubt as to whether this was at the 1957 Open Day. [Resolved as 57 - click to see]. None of the 4 Hunter squadrons at Jever, 4, 93, 98 or 118 had an aircraft with a tail letter of G and the number ending in 84. There was one aircraft which was numbered XE684 and it looks like a 6 on the main wheel fairing. The number on the rear fuselage, partly obscured by the airman's head, looks like a W but could be an X on a curved surface? There are no records of an F.4 starting with W and ending with 84 that was ever at Jever. XE684 was an F4 and was on all 4 Sqns as follows: 98SSqn 29Aug55, 4Sqn 3Oct55, 118Sqn 20Dec55, 93Sqn 18Jan56, 229 OCU 22Mar57, 111 Sqn Reduced to spares, May61. The problem with this record from David Griffin's CD on the Hawker Hunter serial numbers is that it was supposed to have been returned to 229 OCU at Chivenor about 3 months before the Open Day? The aircraft in the photograph is a Hunter F4 as the separate engine combustion chambers confirm it to be an Avon 113 Series.

- A SG 38 Glider (D-6113) of the civilian Jever Gliding Club about to take off from the station - 1957. Production of the SG38 started in 1938 and in the following years must have been the most used single-seat training glider in Europe. This glider was launched by using a strong rubber rope or later with the aid of a winch. For safety reasons all pupils were instructed never to fly over the forest but always to remain within the boundary of the airfield.
- Civilian Gliding Club Friesland/Jever - Early 1957. Many of us will remember the gliding club that used the airfield on most weekends. Walter Kuntzsch, together with a few other air-minded enthusiasts, founded the club at Jever in 1951 and he became president a few years later. Kuntzsch was born near Dresden were he made his first glider flight at the age of 16. In WW II he flew Junkers Ju 52s and later was a civilian employee on the Station. A used SG38 glider was purchased in 1954 which was named 'Maria' - the last Regent of Jever town (Maria of Jever). Around 1958 the club was able to work closely with the RAF Jever Gliding Club which proved to be very beneficial for both clubs. The closure of the station in 1960/61 put an end to all gliding activities at Jever. Being only a single-seater the SG38 had only a restricted C of A which was not helpful. The Grunau Baby was only on loan to the club and so was returned to its owner. The civilian club moved over to the Marianseal Airport around 1960 before finally amalgamating with the Flying Club Waterkant - Zetel.

My diary for Friday 15th May finishes halfway down the page saying "Bob, Col, Fred and I got back seat for the four of us. Settled in and dead on 1400 we left Jever for Paris." - RAF Jever 111 Sqn Formation Aeros Team passing through and being turned round by ASF on their way to an air display at Rygge in Norway - 22May59. By expanding the original photo it is possible to see that the nearest aircraft is Hunter F.6 XG264 F. The next one in line is either T or Y.
- RAF Jever 111 Sqn Formation Aeros Team passing through and being turned round by ASF on their way to an air display at Rygge, Norway - 22May59. Carefull examination of the original photo shows this to be Hunter F.6 R (on the nosewheel door). Pete Latham reports the following: "My Jever flights in 1959 were: 6/7 May, Meteor 7 (pre show recce for Rygge); 9/11 May in Hunter 6 'R' was not Bitburg but Wiesbaden; 22/25 Hunter 6 'N' Show at Rygge via Jever; 6/7 June Hunter 6 'T' show at Jever. I did not begin using Hunter 6 'X' as my regular mount until 15 March 1960 and then only until I needed to maximise the size of the formation by using the Hunter T7." So although the cockpit markings look like the Boss, Pete Latham's aircraft, he seems to have been flying 'N' at Rygge on that occasion?
- RAF Jever 111 Sqn Formation Aeros Team passing through and being turned round by ASF on their way to an air display at Rygge, Norway - probably Fri 22May59. Thanks to research by David Watkins and Peter Latham we have learnt the following: Peter Latham says "I can find no trace of ever flying Hunter 6 'X' in 1959. My Jever flights in 1959 were: 6/7 May, Meteor 7 (pre show recce for Rygge); 9/11 May in Hunter 6 'R' was not Bitburg but Wiesbaden; 22/25 Hunter 6 'N' Show at Rygge via Jever; 6/7 June Hunter 6 'T' show at Jever. I did not begin using Hunter 6 'X' as my regular mount until 15 March 1960 and then only until I needed to maximise the size of the formation by using the Hunter T7." This is what Peter had to say about the silver Hunter trainer: "I first flew Hunter T7 'Z' on the return trip from a show over Lisbon on 11th June 1959, and I first lead the team with it on a rehearsal on 7th July 1959 with a Mr Blackburn, who was the Daily Express senior photographer, who used a portable panoramic camera to get some great pictures. The first show I lead with it, by then in black livery, was on 9th September for the SBAC Farnborough show and thereafter I used it on most displays and rehearsals." Pete wrote further: "I am trying to get a definitive answer to your question and should soon get replies from those with better memories than me. The photo of the T7 shows a black drop tank so I presume that it was ours or a borrowed one. I did not start leading with the T7 until August/September 1959 so it is likely that we did not go to the expense of painting it black until then. Leading with the T7 was not easy as the off-set seat and shape of the windscreen top frame made keeping the loop straight when the horizon was out of sight difficult. With a minimum of 14 aircraft for every display, and sometimes 18, the arrival loop and the final landing double loop had a frontage of 9 aircraft the same as Roger Topp's 22. If I twisted the loop it gave great pain to the outer wing men and would spoil the appearance of the formation. I had a vertical mounted slip and skid instrument fitted to the left of the gunsight but eventually overcame the problem by practice and concentration and had it removed. Subsequently Brian Mercer told David Watkins: "Brian thinks that it was on 22 May, while the aircraft were en-route to Rygge, Norway." - Anglo-German Week RAF Jever Open Day Avro Canada CF-100 NQ435 Royal Canadian Air Force - 6Jun59. This is an unusual view as the CF-100, an interceptor, does not have its wing tip rocket pods. The aircraft had no guns just the two pods of 100 2.75 inch folding fin rockets in each. The idea was that the aircraft flew line-astern on the large Russian bombers and launched the two hundred rockets in a cloud ensuring that there would be many hits. The pods have probably been taken off for safety as a display aircraft. Towards the end of its life, in comparison with more modern Sabres, etc. its was rather slow and the pilots came in for some ribbing on the radio. One day, in exasperation at being teased about his lack of guns, a CF-100 pilot pressed the transmit button and said, "Shut up! or I'll fly up alongside you and blow up!"

- John Mackenzie says he could never figure out why this contented puzzled looking sow was housed between the 93 squadron hangar and the railway line. His pal on 4 Squadron reckoned it was 93 Squadron's mascot - but he would wouldn't he! [Web Master's Notes: Before John's time at Jever, around 55-56, 118 Squdon did have a pig as a mascot. She was called Elspeth and was won in a local fete at Celle by Bodger Edwards before 118 Sqn came up to Jever. The series of pictures from the squadron photo here (Click to see) and the next four pages, explains the fun that they had with her and her quartering behind the hangers. Unfortunately eventually she had to be quietly retired to the abattoir. However you will see from these references that the station had a PSI Farm that provided fresh produce for the station and this pig is probably one of the last residents of the station pig farm?]

There were always local football teams looking to play a 'friendly' (no such thing - no prisoners were taken!) although we always had a great time after the match. This photo is of the Tech Wing team that played against Hoenkirchen in October 1960. We changed in the hotel which was adjacent to the pitch. Nobby Hobbs and John Mackenzie visited this hotel 30 years later and found the German 2nd left in the back row by showing this photo in the hotel. After this particular game a whole load of young frauleins arrived. We all thought our luck was in - half an hour later their parents arrived and took them away!

- Fellow Junior Technician and armourer Mick "Eroll" Flynn posing on the demolished Flak Tower directly behind the Central Armoury. Apparently it formed a part of the outer defences of Wilhelmshaven during WWII. Mick and John Mackenzie were apprentices at RAF Halton and were posted to Jever together in September 1959. He worked in the Ejection Seat Bay while John was in the Central Armoury servicing 30mm's. They remain friends to this day - April 1961.
- Royal Air Force Germany Soccer Cup Winners - 22nd April 1961 - Royal Air Force Jever. RAF Jever 3 - RAF Laarbruch 0. Scorers: Bill Orchard, John Mackenzie Tommy Fairgrieve. Played at RAF Gutersloh. S. Smith Station Commander. Front row: J/T Derek (Nobby) Hobbs, Central Armoury, SAC Bill Orchard, Comcen, SAC Andy Harkness, ASF, Cpl Pete Penman, PTI, SAC Johnny Green, ASF, SAC Tommy Fairgrieve, MT Section. Sweet success - John thinks that this was the first time that Jever had won it, it was certainly the last! At that time, with the closure impending the team were breaking up with postings out. Paddy Purcell was actually at Laarbruch, but he made it back and certainly joined in the celebrations. We were all so chuffed at our victory. None more so than the Group Captain. He always supported us, turning up in his Alfa Romeo sports car. The Laarbruch team were really miffed at losing. Even to this day my pal who was in the Laarbruch team can't believe that they lost. Last time we met John showed him his winner's cup to confirm it! The cup remains one of John's most treasured possessions.

- This is the cover page of the RAF Jever Station Newsletter. In the newsletter is a report (page 7) of the RAF Germany soccer cup final and the results (page 6) of the Jever golf club spring meeting. John played a lot of golf with Doug Delaney and Les Taylor, both GCI controllers. Les Taylor was on the entertainment committee of the Officers' Mess and talked John into helping out in the upstairs bar in the Officers' Mess. The pay was 20DM (1961 £1 15s. 4d.; 2016 £37.60) and a champagne breakfast. He thinks it was quite a big bash in 1961 . It was an interesting evening. There was a cartoon of Gp Capt Smith as an indian chief; John was not sure how impressed he was!

- Cafe Rahrdum - Jever town popular watering hole in the early 60s. Interestingly in the Gastzimmer frame, shows the dartboard in its wooden wall cupboard that Derek knows was in use by RAF personnell during the 50's. This however had been removed prior to when Derek arrived in 1964. The landlord, Alfred Schmedes, would often refer to its use however and to the fondness he had for the servicemen who used it.
1967
- Cafe Rahrdum - Jever town still a popular watering hole in 1967. A point of observation is that both postcards display the same scene of a chap sat outside at a table. It looks as though he had great patience and had not moved over the time gap between when the postcard photo's were taken!
1990
- Block 36 from Block 35 - November 1990. In 1960, Block 36 housed ASF, Station Flight and ancillary Tech Wing personnel. Block 35, ground floor, MT Section; middle floor COMCEN, PBX and various other ground electronic trades. The armourers were in the attic, sparse but warm so they didn't complain! When 'Nobby' Hobbs and John Mackenzie visited the unit in 1990, all the bunks in the attic had been ripped out and the attic contained a table tennis table. Their guide expressed some surprise that people had actually lived there.
- John Mackenzie outside one of his favourite haunts, the Kaffeehaus on a return visit to Jever in November 1990. He says he can taste the Cutlet and Kartofflen to this day. It was run by Alfred and Mutti and 'Herr Ober' was the long-suffering Rudi. He found the place much the same and obviously frequented by detached squadrons of the RAF after John had long gone judging by the squadron badges and memorabilia that adorned the bar. He relates that for some reason the journey back from the Kaffeehaus (always on foot) used to develop into a race which 'Nobby' Hobbs - despite some cheating and blatant obstructioin - always won!
- When 'Nobby' Hobbs and John Mackenzie visited Jever in 1990 they managed to track down their old German fitter from the Armoury, Alfred Werner. His wife was delighted to see them. They were saddened to learn that Alfred, (shown on the left with 'Nobby' Hobbs), had dementia and had no recollection of anything. Amazingly after 20 years since they left he looked nearly the same.

This confirms the welcome that Jever shows to old friends from the RAF days at the airfield which we experienced so rewardingly during our return visit in 2006. Translated it says: "Dear Mr. Frost, We are pleased and happy that we have in England a 'Jever Fan', who is interested in following the history of our town. We wish you many more holidays in our town with much pleasure and good recuperation. Signed: Lorentzen, Mayor and Hashagen, Town Director for Jever in May 1998.

- During the 101 SU visit back to Javer in May 2008, Brian Walker reports that he finally found the old Deutscheshaus with Maurice Parker's help. Back in the old days airmen would walk up from camp, across the level crossing, then right and first left into the street opposite the railway station. The name has changed to 'Choco', part of which is a private dance school, so still keeping some of it's original purpose.
