Two views from the windows of Block 40 - with and without snow.   The long low building on the right is the Old Airmens' Mess.   Lofty Hope tells an amusing story about the Old Airmens' Mess: "At one point there was a huge fire engine, ex-German war.   At lunch time there was always a mad scramble to get to the cookhouse before anyone else.   One day as all the lorries came to a hurried halt outside the cookhouse, the fire engine failed to stop in time and ran into the cookhouse!!   Jankers!!   By the way the food at Jever, at that time, 1953, was awful.   We were known as the Brown Stew Brigade.   It was on the menu everyday!   It was great when we went to Sylt.".  This has been replaced by a modern all ranks building where everyone has lunch these days - click to see outside and inside.
