Points for a Good No. 1.
1. Be certain every man knows his job - accomplished by thorough briefings
in training - brief so that you cannot be misunderstood.
2. Use the Sun to advantage if the situation permits.
3. Note the slow A/C in the formation and allow - you will have them with
you in the scrap.
4. Cruise at high Mach. No.
5. Make turns smooth and consistent when not engaged or engaging - better
look out by formation.
6. Find and note the condensation level.
7. Always turn to meet the attack.
8. If you slow down to manoeuvre with the enemy - keep your second pair
disengaged as long as possible.
9. When attacking never go between the leader and his No. 2 - sandwich -
take last man.
10. Over your. No. 2.
11. Know your A/C - know your fuel consumption.
TACTICS.
1. We have looked at the problems in flying the various positions.
2. Let us now look at the four pilots working as a team.
3. The reactions and manoeuvres - what this team does together is: -
"TACTICS"
We do not presume to say what should be done in a future air battle. We
can but learn from those who have had some success. Quoting circumstances can
form a background, and training effectively can contribute to this background.
Tactics must be effective,
flexible
simple.
The sequence of events in the air with four a/c operating as a team is:-
Seeing the enemy;
Appreciating what he is doing, and
Reacting correctly.
Pair versus Pair.
1. Do not assume the pair you are attacking is the only pair in the sky.
2. Begin your attack.
3. Manoeuvre to get behind.
4. If they don't see you your job is simple.
5. If they do - they will turn into you and the scrap is on.
6. Should they turn hard enough you will not be able to close and track.
7. Trade airspeed for altitude - and pull high to the rear.
Always a problem hero - whether to slow down and fight or disengage safely. In
doubt be aggressive. Sometimes you get a pair continuously assessing the situation
