R.A.F. JEVER December, 1959 Operations.
This was a very successful month, since despite the bad weather and early
dusk normally associated with the month of December, the target of 340 hours was
achieved on the last day.   Most pilots managed to get a considerable amount of
instrument flying plus a few dusk reconnaissance sorties.
Exercise Quick Train was held on 11th December.   The alert was sounded at
05.55 hours and No. 2 Squadron had the first aircraft on the station taxying by
06.25 hours, and by 07.00 hours all aircraft were safely in dispersal.
Flying started at dawn and although the weather was bad in places, the target
area was clear enough to let down below cloud and all the targets were covered.
Exercise "Thunderbolt" was also scheduled for the same day.   Because of
extremely bad weather over the target most squadrons withdrew from the exercise.
However it gave the squadron pilots very good training in flying in bad weather
since the cloud base over the target was between 100-200 feet average all day,
and all managed to get to the target, with some very good photographic results.
One Round Robin exercise was carried out in December.   This was flown
by Flight Lieutenant B. Wallis and A.B. Hives.   They flew to Chievres Belgian
Air Force base on the 18th December and were turned round in less than an hour.
The "Northern Lights" exercise should have been flown this month, but was
cancelled due to bad weather.
Flight Lieutenant W. Sheppard, a gunnery instructor from Sylt, was
converted to the Swift during this month.   He spent a week with the Squadron
and flew approximately 10 hours.
At the end of the month, an ex-pilot of the Squadron, Flight Lieutenant
D.C. Gathercole
, who is now an instructor at Chivenor, arrived for a Christmas
Attachment, and is helping very well with the flying.
Social
On the 23rd December, two sorties were flown in the morning and everything
was put away for Christmas.   The officers invited all the other ranks on the
Squadron, to the crewroom where two barrels of beer were set up.   These were
finished by 14.00 hours and the airmen then had to prepare their bar in the
barrack clock for the judging at 15.00 hours.   They put up an excellent showing
and managed to get third place on the station.   All Squadron members were
present that evening and that started the usual Christmas festivities.
