Today the Squadron flew as much as the serviceability allowed. The first sorties

Todays flying commenced after a mornings snow ploughing. The first of the winter.
Later flying stopped as heavy snow was lurking just north of the airfield.

Today was a special occasion as early snow ploughing allowed off one sortie in
the mid afternoon. For this, No. 4 Squadron raised 7 aircraft and displayed them as a
battle fluid six with a singleton for the possible pounce. The six aircraft made three
runs over the airfield in different close formations.

Flt. Lt. R.W. Millward today returned from F.C.S. course in the U.K. A limited amount of flying was possible today. The first two sorties were a battle flight scramble
for an unidentified aircraft (Canberra). Sqn Ldr. T.J. McElhaw left for leave today,
and Flt. Lt. M.J. Tyrrell left for the second Winter Survival Course.

Fg. Off. R. Booth returned from the years first winter survival course. Flying
commenced after lunch today. The thaw set in over the weekend, and apart from mountains
of slush and ice gradually being carted away, the airfield is returning to normal above
zero conditions.

Today a team from F.C.S. West Raynham visited the Squadron on a delayed visit,
and enjoyed a considerable amount of flying due to the absence of 8 pilots on promotion
examinations.

Todays extensive programme included two pairs flown off telescramble on an E.C.M.
exercise. These days the Squadron is flying on a large number of battle four sorties.

Today was a full flying day due to the months poor total to date, and a large
number of air to sea firing practices firing four guns were carried out to the suspected
detriment of the airframes. Fg. Off. P.S. Martin left for leave today.

Today was a day of intensive flying followed by night flying. The accent
during the day was on cine' ¼ exercises at 30,000 feet and during the night flying
several navigation trips were achieved before the programme was cancelled due to all
airfields in the vicinity going out in fog.

During the day cine' weave was again the main item on the programme, with a further
accent on individual manual landings after the cine' exercises. Night flying was curtail-
ed by fog a third of the programme had been accomplished.

The weather today was mainly A3 except for a very short spell, and this resulted
in flying limitations, although later on the aircraft serviceability was the over-riding
factor in keeping down the hours.
