SYLT 1.10.56   A good day with regard to weather but there was no flying between 11.00 hours and 13.30
hours due to unserviceability of the G.C.I.   A total of 37 sorties were flown for 19.40
hours.   An average day with regard to firing scores.   Fg. Off. Howard turning in the best
score of 32%.

2.10.56   The weather was generally poor all day today.   Flying started on time but it was
cancelled from 09.30 hours until 14.30 hours.   The firing scores today were very good,
an average of 20.7% being attained.   There were several scores of over 30%.

3.10.56   Almost all of the air to air programme was carried out, just a few sorties being
cancelled due to weather.

4.10.56   Early morning fog caused the first few sorties to be cancelled but the rest of the days
programme went off as planned.   36 sorties were flown for a total of 18½ hours.

5.10.56   Flying started off well but very bad weather caused it to be 'scrubbed' at 11.30 hours,
a total of only 9 hours being flown.

6.10.56   The squadron flew right through until 15.30 hours today to make up for some of the time
that has been lost due to bad weather recently.   A total of 15 hours were flown in
29 sorties.

  7.10.56   Stand-down.
8.10.56   Unserviceable G.C.I. equipment meant that no air to air firing was carried out today.
The squadron did a small amount of high level battle flying for a total of 12 hours.

JEVER 9.10.56   The full flying programme was carried out today with some good firing results.   The
overall average is making steady progress upwards and the squadron looks like finishing
up with a new record average for both high and low level firing.

/TD> 10.10.56   Once again the full air to air programme was carried out, a total of 19 hours being
flown.

11.10.56   An excellent day as regards the weather.   The squadron is now coming to the end of its
task at Sylt and the programme was today designed to bring some of the "stragglers"
up to the required 21 effective shoots.   A total of 20 hours were flown today.

SYLT 12.10.56   The final days shooting at the 'flag' brought the squadron high level average to 14.1%
being a new record for the Hunter.   The squadron now holds the record scores for both
high and low levels.

13.10.56   The squadron today finished off its firing at Sylt with two practice double re-arms
and turn-rounds, with glider firing sorties.   The excellent time of 12 mins. 38 secs.
was set up for a turn-round of 4 aircraft and all gliders sent up were effectively
shot to pieces.

  14.10.56   Stand-down.
15.10.56   The high level battle 'sixes' were flown today with a few syllabus trips as well.
Flying stopped at mid-day to enable a start to be made to the packing for the return
to Jever.

JEVER 16.10.56   The squadron flew back to Jever this morning, all 12 aircraft returning together,
carrying out several successful 'fly-pasts' over both Sylt and Jever.   A few high level
battle sorties were flown in the afternoon to bring the daily total flying up to
about 21 hours.

17.10.56   As the ground crew have not yet returned from Sylt only 6 sorties were flown today on
high level battle and cine.

18.10.56   As the majority of the ground crew still hadn't returned from Sylt, the aircrew assisted
in the turn rounds today.   Several high level battle sorties were flown with a few
cine trips.

19.10.56   The morning was spent doing syllabus sorties.   In the afternoon the squadron flew a
close formation sortie in which several fly-pasts were carried out over Jever, and also
a high level battle sortie with ten aircraft in each case.   A total of 27 hours were
flown today.

  20.10.56   Stand-down.
  21.10.56   Stand-down.
JEVER 22.10.56   The airfield was 'Red' all the morning with low cloud and bad visibility.   Flying
started at 14.00 hours and several cine sorties were carried out in the afternoon.
12 hours night flying were carried out in the evening to bring the total for the day
up to 21 hours.

23.10.56   Bad weather restricted flying to green cards holders today but 17 hours were flown almost
entirely on cine sorties in pairs.

24.10.56   No flying today due to bad weather.
25.10.56   A good flying day in which a total of 30 hours were flown on a well balanced mixture
of high level battle, cine, and syllabus trips.

26.10.56   Flying was confined to the morning today as an escape and evasion exercise started late
in the afternoon.   23 hours were flown in the time available, exceeding the monthly
target.

  27.10.56   Escape and Evasion Exercise.
  28.10.56   Stand-down.
29.10.56   The airfield started off 'Red' and after a short period of 'Amber' in which 10 sorties
were flown,'clamped' again for the rest of the day.

30.10.56   As the target had already been exceeded no particular effort was made today and only
19 sorties were flown almost entirely confined to cine.

31.10.56   Just a few sorties were flown today mainly low flying which brought the monthly total
up to 382 hours.
