Place Date Time Summary of Events                     COMPILING OFFICER__Fg. Off. A. F. Brewer_________   REF. TO APPENDICES

JEVER 1.9.56   A good mornings' flying, a total of six serviceable aircraft enabled 13½ hours to be
flown, confined entirely to simulated banner attacks.

  2.9.56   Stand-down.
3.9.56   Flying was restricted by bad visibility and low cloud to two sections per squadron at
first.   The weather steadily deteriorated and at 11.45 hours flying was 'scrubbed' for
the day.   A total of 10 hours was flown on cine and practice interceptions.

4.9.56   A fairly good flying day with six serviceable aircraft enabled 24 hours to be flown.
These were again mainly simulated flag attacks with manual landings and aerobatic
exercises.

5.9.56   Simulated banner attacks again figured prominently in the days flying with only 15
sorties being flown due to the normal Wednesday half day.

6.9.56   In spite of the fact that half of the night flying was cancelled due to bad weather a
total of 30 hours was flown today.   Three of the new pilots had their first night
Hunter trips this evening.

7.9.56   A good flying day in which 27 hours were flown on high level battle and simulated
banner attacks, bringing the monthly hours to 120, which is 40 hours above the target
for this stage of month.

8.9.56   The airfield was 'Red' at first and closed at 12.30 hours.   Therefore only 9 sorties
were flown during the late morning.

JEVER 9.9.56   Stand-down.
/TD> 10.9.56   A good flying day in which, in spite of night flying being cancelled, 27 hours were
achieved.   In view of the attachment to Sylt next Monday, the flying was entirely
confined to simulated banner attacks.   Night flying was cancelled due to bad visibility
after a weather check by Sqn.Ldr. N.C.P. Buddin.

11.9.56   Low cloud and bad visibility restricted flying to one pair per Squadron at first, and
it wasn't until 10.45 hours that the airfield became 'Green'.

JEVER 12.9.56   A half day and early aircraft unserviceability kept the number of sorties flown today
down to 9.

13.9.56   The only flying today consisted of 2 air tests and a visit by Sqn.Ldr. N.C.P. Buddin and
Flt.Lt. D.P. Denison to Sylt.

14.9.56   No flying today as everything is loaded for Sylt.
15.9.56   There was a stand-down today after a 'Battle of Britain' parade first thing.   The
main party left by rail for Sylt this morning.

  16.9.56   Stand-down.
17.9.56   The air party flew to Sylt just before lunch today in 12 Hunters and a Vampire T.11.
The Hunters carried out several 'Fly-Pasts' over Sylt in close formation before landing.
The pilots attended introductory lectures in the afternoon.

SYLT 18.9.56   Flying today consisted entirely of cine trips as a final 'polishing-up' of attacks
before actually commencing firing.   39 Hunter sorties were flown for a total of 25.10
hours, and 9 Vampire sorties consistently of demonstrations and ferry trips.

19.9.56   A very good day as regards weather enabled the full flying programme to be carried out.
Firing started in earnest and a total of 38 sorties were flown.   Most of them were
actual firing sorties but a few cine trips were carried out by the newer pilots.

20.9.56   Bad visibility restricted flying until 09.00 hours but it cleared and the remainder of
the programme went off without a hitch.   A total of 32 sorties were flown on Hunters,
and a few on Vampire T.11's giving the airmen trips.

21.9.56   Very good weather enabled 38 sorties to be flown.   The full air to air programme was
carried out with Hunters, several Vampire trips were flown, and a few pilots flew
Meteors on towing trips.

22.9.56   Only 17 Hunter sorties were flown today due to the normal Saturday stand-down.   The
full air to air programme was carried out.

23.9.56   Officially a stand-down but several of the pilots spent the day assisting the ground
crew to check the re harmonisation of the aircraft and gun packs.

SYLT 24.9.56   Yet another good flying day with regard to the weather and flying.   A total of 41 sorties
were flown on air to air.

25.9.56   The full air to air programme was carried out today with a total of 35 sorties being
flown for 17.35 hours.

26.9.56   This morning was the final period of firing at 10,000 feet.   The squadron did very well
and finished up with an average of 13.4% at this level.   This easily exceeds the previous
best which was 12.6%.   In the afternoon the first sorties at 20,000 feet were carried
out with some quite creditable results.

27.9.56   Low cloud and rain resulted in only one flag being sent off.   Three pilots managed to
fire on it before the weather again closed in for the day.

28.9.56   Low cloud, bad visibility and rain 'washed out' flying completely for the day.
29.9.56   A return to the good weather enabled the full programme to be carried out, a total of
18 sorties being achieved for 10 hours.   This puts the squadron well ahead of the
monthly target.

  30.9.56   Stand-down.
