JAN'58 |

Flying was limited during the first week of the month due to bad weather. However,
flying was carried out as often as possible, and several trips were made to Jever to
deliver ventral tanks.
The advanced party left Geilenkirchen on the 5th of the month with Flying Officer D.
Gathercole in charge.
The second week of the month was concerned entirely with clearing the squadron from
Geilenkirchen, and no flying was carried out, except air tests. The Main Ground Party
left early in the morning of the 15th with Flying Officer G. Hagan in charge. The air
party were due to take off at 10.00 hours the same morning, but as we expected, we
were unable to leave until 12.00 on 18th, due to persistent fog.
For the remaining days of the month only two were full flying days, due to snow and
ice for a week, and then several days of fog.
On the 28th, Sqn Ldr. R.S. Mortley, A.F.C., flew to R.N.A.S. Ford, to gain
knowledge of the Scimitar in the Fighter Recce role. Flt. Lt. L.A. Boyer flew to Karup
on the 29th for Exercise 'Northern Lights'.
