		1.   Operations.
		         (a)   The month's flying was seriously curtailed by the runway being unserviceable
for 10 days due to snow and ice.   However maximum use was made of available
flying weather, and a total of 166.45 hours was flown, out of a target of 250 hours.
        (b)   Exercise Pipegreen, an exercise with the German Army was held on 7th
January, but only a few sorties were completed due to adverse weather conditions.
However, the sorties flown were successful, and provided good training for the
        squadron pilots in difficult conditions.
        (c)   Two "Fullhouse" exercises were flown during the month, on the 21st and
29th January.   On the latter "Fullhouse" the German Army provided a series of
targets on a route march, in preparation for the "Sassoon" and "Royal Flush"
        exercises later in the year.
        (d)   On Friday 6th January Flt. Lt. Hives, Flt. Lt. St. Aubyn, Fg. Off, Hagan
and Plt. Off. Holden-Rushworth visited Soltau training area, and watched the
firing of "Honest John" missiles by the German Army.
        (e)   On Wednesday 27th January an L.70 anti-aircraft battery of the German
Army visited the airfield.   The battery consisted of three L.70 guns, and a
"Fledermaus" radar.   All squadron pilots tried the handling of the guns, and
in return the German soldiers were shown over our aeroplanes.   Unfortunately,
the adverse weather precluded any flying against the battery.
        (f)   Wg. Cdr. P.G. Ellis, D.F.C. of Royal Air Force Germany Flight Safety Staff
was converted to the Swift during this month.   He spent three days with the
squadron, but owing to the poor weather conditions was only able to fly two sorties
in which he got 1 hour 20 minutes.
