Operations
Flying Officer A.G. Newing spent two days at Boscombe Down at the begin-
ing of June to fly the modified Hunter 6 with half geared ailerons and four
external fuel tanks, which is similar to the Hunter F.R. 9, possibly replacing the
Swift.
Exercise Royal Flush IV took place from 1st to 5th June and the Gruenther
Trophy was won outright by 2nd A.T.A.F. The Squadron was represented by Flight
Lieutenant A.L. Martin who was flying reserve in the Swift team. No. 2 M.F.P.S.
under the command of Flight Lieutenant R.D. Hall represented 2nd A.T.A.F. low -
level team, and did extremely well in helping win the Trophy.
Saturday, 6th June was the annual Anglo-German day at Jever. The
Commanding Officer, Squadron Leader C.A. Wade led the flypast of four Swifts and
eight Hunters, and individual aerobatic displays were given by Flight Lieutenant
R. Rimington in a Swift and Flight Lieutenant P.J. Adair in a Vampire T.11.
Three days of the month were spent on naval reconnaissance in liaison
with the German Navy. The Navy left Cuxhaven and spent their first three days
exercising in the Heligoland area.
The Squadron did their first air - ground firing this month for a year
and a half and proved very satisfactory with average scores.
Two aircraft went to Chievres in Belgium for the Round Robin exercise this
month. They were flown by Flying Officer A.G. Newing and Pilot Officer P. Holden-
Rushworth.
An American Armed Forces Day took place at U.S.A.F. Base Toul-Rosieres in
France, and two Swifts from the squadron took part. Flight Lieutenant R. Rimington
flew a solo aerobatic display and Flight Lieutenant R. Barcilon flew the spare
aircraft.
The Squadron hours target was reached with ease this month by the 29th June,
but the weather was exceptional even for June.
