May, 1958     Operational
May has been quite a full month even though one week's flying was lost in order to
prepare the aircraft for the Sylt detachment.   The whole of the flying effort was put
into cine on the flag, since all the pilots were very much out of practice in air firing.
The advanced party left for Sylt on Wednesday 14th May led by Flt. Lt. J.R. Whittam
and the road convoy left on 16th May headed by Flt. Lt. B. Wallis and Fg. Off. B.W.
Lavandar
, who also carried a valuable cargo of Hereward, the squadron mascot in their
Land-Rover.   Unfortunately the weather was bad on Monday, 19th May which prevented the
aircraft from arriving together as a squadron, but all had arrived by 13.30.
The air firing started quite well, but slowly declined and after five days firing
the Squadron average stood at 16.9%.
A very memorable occasion was the 46th birthday of the Squadron on 12th May, 1958,
and a ceremonial Birthday Parade and Drumhead Service was held on Sunday 4th May to
commemorate the occasion.   A former commanding officer of the Squadron, Air Vice Marshal
W.A. Opis, C.B., C.B.E. reviewed the parade.
The pilots gave a sherry party for the Officers Mess after the parade, and
then made the customary visits to the parties organised for the other Squadron members.
A flypast was flown by the station for the A.O.C. after his annual inspection on
Tuesday 6th May, which was led by six Swifts from the Squadron, headed by the Commanding
Officer, Squadron Leader C.A. Wade.
The Anglo-German week at Jever was started with an open day on Saturday 10th May in
which a number of the Squadron participated.   Flt. Lt. J. R. Green gave an excellent
display of solo aerobatics, and Flt. Lt. J.R. Whittam and Fg. Off. G. E. Hagan broke
away after the formation flypast in order to make a tactical reconnaissance of the
airfield.
Two members of the Squadron were invited to Sylt to be dined-out on their leaving
the Squadron.   They are Flt. Lt's. M A Kelly and P. J. T. Retief, who have both
returned to the United Kingdom.
