Jever May, 1959   Operations
One Exercise Full-House was held at th beginning of the month to decide on
the three pilots to compete with No. 79 Squadron on Exercise Joker IV.   The three pilots
chosen were Flight Lieutenant O. Bergh, A.L. Martin and Flying Officer A.G. Newing,
with Flying Officer G.E. Hagan as reserve.  Exercise Joker IV was held at Gutersloh on
May 6th and the three chosen pilots for Exercise Royal Flush IV were Flight Lieutenant
A. McL. Cobham, No. 79 Squadron, Flt. Lt. A.L. Martin, No. 2 Squadron and Flight
Lieutenant J. Turner, No. 79 Squadron.
A small flying programme was arranged for the visit of thirty headmasters
from various schools in England.   Five Swift aircraft led by the C.O., Squadron Leader
C.A. Wade
headed the formation flypast, and individual aerobatic displays were flown
by Flight Lieutenant R. Rimington in a Swift and Flight Lieutenant P.J. Adair in a
Vampire T.11.
A Swift was taken to Ramstein in the American Zone for a static display
on 17th May by Flight Lieutenant D.C. Gathercole, who returned the following day.
The No. 2 Mobile Field Photographic Section commanded by Flight Lieutenant
R. D. Hall
was detached to Eindhoven on the 16th May for Exercise Royal Flush and
Flight Lieutenant A.L. Martin flew a Swift there on 20th May.
Two aircraft were again utilised for Exercise "Northern Light" this month.
They were flown by Flight Lieutenants B.W. Wallis and R. Rimington.   They were staged
through Karup Denmark both ways on the way to Solar, Norway, and gained experience in
flying over Norwegian terrain.   They were entertained extremely well in Stavanger
by the pilots of the Norwegian Photographic Squadron.
The Air Officer Commanding's inspection took place on the 29th May which
finished with a flypast of fifteen aircraft and also am individual aerobatic display
from each Squadron.
One more pilot was converted to the Swift during the month.   He is the Wing
Gunnery Officer, Flight Lieutenant J. Butler.
          SOCIAL
The Squadron pilots as a whole were invited to the Spring Ball at Gutersloh by
the pilots of No. 79 Squadron.   About 70% of this Squadron managed to attend and spent
a very pleasant week-end with their friendly rivals.
One of the few remaining bachelors of the Squadron, Flight Lieutenant R.L.
Barcilon
was married on the 23rd May.   Unfortunately none of the squadron members
could attend as the wedding took place in England.
The christening of Flight Lieutenant D. Burton's son was an excuse for another
social gathering.   This took place on Sunday, 24th May and the majority of the
squadron was present.
