7.9.59        This week the Squadron is concentrating on aircraft servicing prior to the Sylt Detachment and consequently the number of hours flown today was reduced through lack of available manpower.  Nevertheless cine' weave practice continued, and in

continued feverishly, together with the packing of all detachment equipment.
On the flying side four air tests were completed; the remaining two sorties making the most of a last fling at cine' weave.   A busy day for all.

12.9.59        The road and rail parties left for Sylt early in the morning, leaving at Jever
only the rear party and the pilots required to fly the aircraft to Sylt on Monday.

R.A.F. Jever & R.A.F. Sylt 14.9.59        At 10.00 hours nine Squadron aircraft took off, and led by the Squadron
Commander, Sqn. Ldr. R.J. Spiers, made three runs over the airfield in close formation
before setting course for Sylt, where they landed one hour later, to find the major
proportion of the Squadron waiting to welcome them.
Both the road and rail parties had arrived without incident and by the time the
aircraft landed, the Squadron was ready, and in good spirits to meet the forthcoming
'Battle'.
After lunch, all aircrew attended a briefing in company with the other visiting
Squadrons - two German, and one Belgium, who are equipped with Sabre 6's and F 84 F's.
Both domestic and technical accommodation was found to be first class, and all
personnel are looking forward to a worthwhile and enjoyable stay.

R.A.F. Sylt 15.9.59        Flying began at 12.30 hours today, and quite a good start was made towards the
cine' weave commitment.   In all, eight successful cine' weave sorties were flown, and
the results were encouraging.
Five pilots have chosen to 'stooge' for the cine' weave exercises, so that
as near a standard stooge as possible may be obtained.

                                                   SORTIES : 15          HOURS : 15.45

16.9.59        Another day of cine' weave, with everyone as keen as mustard as the scores creep
higher and higher.  Not only has the Squadron plenty of inter-flight rivalry, there is
also the hope that the cine' weave average will exceed the present record - held by No.
26 Squadron who gained 76.48%

                                                   SORTIES : 18          HOURS : 20.05

17.9.59        A day very similar to yesterday, with the majority of sorties again on cine'
weave
.  Today, however, four pilots received in addition, air to air firing demonstrations
by the staff P.A.I.
The Squadron cine average is still rising, and with it, the morale of everyone.
Leave:-    Fg. Off. W.R.R. Anderson
                                                   SORTIES : 22          HOURS : 21.50

18.9.59        More air to air firing demonstrations and cine on the flag sorties were competed
during the day, together with the remainder of the cine' weave commitment, the results
of which have pleased everyone - both here and at Jever.  The Squadron competition was won
by 'B' Flight - who are now eagerly awaiting the delivery of a barrel of beer from their
gallant opponents.

                                                   SORTIES : ??          HOURS : ??.??

19.9.59        Today was the first full attempt at air to air firing, and although the Squadron
'stood down' for the weekend at lunchtime, twelve sorties were flown.  Unfortunately,
the aircraft radar ranging equipment doesn't appear to be behaving satisfactorily
against a towed target so far, and many of the firing sorties were aborted.
Leave:-    Fg. Off. W.R.R. Anderson
                                                   SORTIES : 12          HOURS :   7.45

21.9.59        Only three sorties were flown today due to bad weather.  Of these, one was a
demonstration flight in a Hunter T.7 and the remainder were test flights to help counter
the radar ranging problems.
Leave:-    Fg. Off. W.R.R. Anderson
                                                   SORTIES :   3          HOURS :   1.55

22.9.59        Todays weather was a great improvement, and the air firing programme was maintained
throughout the day.  Radar ranging errors are still causing much concern, but some success
has been achieved.  Nevertheless, quite a number of sorties had to be aborted.
Leave:-    Fg. Off. W.R.R. Anderson
                                                   SORTIES : 26          HOURS : 15.30

23.9.59        A very poor days flying today, as the G.C.I. became unserviceable after lunch,
and the weather deteriorated.
Leave:-    Fg. Off. W.R.R. Anderson
                                                   SORTIES : 10          HOURS :   6.00

24.9.59        The range G.C.I. was still unserviceable until lunchtime today, when a start was
made.  Consequently, not many effective sorties were flown.
Leave:-    Fg. Off. W.R.R. Anderson
                                                   SORTIES : 13          HOURS :   7.05

25.9.59        A good days flying today, as far as sorties were concerned, but still, many shoots
were aborted because of radar ranging unserviceability.
Leave:-    Fg. Off. W.R.R. Anderson
                                                   SORTIES : 23          HOURS : 13.50

26.9.59        The weather today was not quite up to the usual standard, but air firing continued
successfully throughout the morning, until the Squadron stood down at lunch time.  All
the aircraft radar sets have now been checked and re-checked, and happily are now
beginning to show better results, although the first weeks air firing scores haven't
proved as high as hoped.
Leave:-    Fg. Off. W.R.R. Anderson
                                                   SORTIES : 12          HOURS :   7.40

28.9.59        The start of a new week, and everyone with a renewed keenness to improve both
their individual and Squadron average.
Aircraft serviceability today was not very good, and of the eighteen sorties
planned, three were cancelled due to aircraft shortage, and although the remaining
fifteen were flown, six of the aircraft were unserviceable on landing.
Leave:-    Fg. Off. W.R.R. Anderson
                                                   SORTIES : 15          HOURS :   9.50

29.9.59        Another day of poor aircraft unserviceability, resulting in the flying programme
being cancelled at 14.30 hours.  From then until cease work at 17.00 hours, all
personnel worked on rectification, and produced six serviceable aircraft for tomorrow.
Leave:-    Fg. Off. W.R.R. Anderson
Sick:-       Fg. Off. R. Booth
                                                   SORTIES : 17          HOURS : 10.00

30.9.59        A much better day today, with enough serviceable aircraft to keep the programme
going without a hitch.  Scores are steadily improving, and the Squadron average now
stands at 23%.
