R.A.F.JEVER     OPERATIONAL DIARY, SEPTEMBER, 1960
INTRODUCTION

      1.     For the first nineteen days of the month the Squadron continued to operate with
No. 93 Squadron as a combined Unit.  On the 19 th. of the month we returned to our
own accommodation in the hangar.
2.     This proved to be another very successful month for the Squadron, and we did
particularly well during the period of Exercise Flashback.

      OPERATIONS
      3. No.s' 4 and 93 Squadrons combined were on Battle Flight from the 6 th to 12 th of the
month and were called upon for four scrambles.  Three of these were ADIZ infringements.
4.     The Squadron training consisted of two main phases.  The first week was devoted
to low level strikes and navigation.  In preparation for the Exercise.  The remainder
of the month was spent on high level tactics, and practice interceptions using the
"pull-up attack" against simulated tail armed bombers.
5.     Night flying was carried out on two nights in preparation for any dusk diversion
or scrambles during the exercise.
6.     EXERCISE FLASHBACK proved to be extremely successful from the point of view of the
Squadron.  We not only had seventeen of our airmen on leave, but most of our ground
equipment was still on convoy en route from CASEAUX.  However, in spite of this we
flew 23 interception missions with 13 claims, and 56 target missions in the 1 st role.
7.     Flying hours for the month were as follows :-
Total Pilot hours 265:15 operational Hunter 6.
Total Sorties Aircraft Hours operational Hunter 6 300

      ADMINISTRATION
      10.     The Squadron operated as a combined unit with No. 93 Squadron under the
command of Sqn. Ldr. M.O. Bergh, A.F.C. up to the 19 th September.  We then returned
to our own accommodation and once more operated independently for the period of
EXERCISE FLASHBACK, and the rest of the month.

      GENERAL
      11. This was a satisfactory month for the Squadron in all respects, and in spite
of the handicaps mentioned, the Squadron's aircraft flew 300:25 hours.
