|
Cloud was low, and flying restricted to low-level battle formation (a four and a
pair) and G.C.A's (4) with a weather recce. |

Cloud based at 2,000 - 3,000 feet made the MEPPEN RANGE difficult to attack, but
12 cannon sorties, 1 GCA and weather recce were made. |

Runway unserviceability at JEVER held up our return until 13.40 hours, when the
first eight Vampire aircraft left for JEVER. Pilots returned by bus and flew seven more
Vampires over, leaving one Vampire u/s and our solitary Sabre for Wing Commander
WEST. The advanced road party left early this morning for JEVER. The pilots who returned
to JEVER were, Flt.Lt. H.B.ILES, Fg.Off's. WALLACE, HANNAH, HARPER,
Plt.Off. MACKNISH, F. Sgt's. TELFER, SHRUBSOLE, leaving Plt.Off. MITCHELL at
AHLHORN. |

6th Tuesday. |
|
The main road party travelled back to-day, as did Fg.Off. MITCHELL in the remaining
Vampire, and also the Sabre (via WUNSTORF). At JEVER unserviceability restricted
flying to a cross-country to AHLHORN and return, one to BRUGGEN and return for
crystals for Sabres yet to come, (both in Vampires), and three Tiger Moth local
sorties. Plt. Off. BALFOUR returned with three Sabres from BRUGGEN. |

8th Thursday. |
|
Three aerobatic sorties and an air test was all the Vampire flying done due to
unserviceability. Four Tiger Moth sorties were flown, giving the airmen some air
experience. |

9th Friday. |
|
Weather was fair. We flew a pair on formation and tail - chase, a cross-country to
AHLHORN and return, and 6 aerobatic sorties. Squadron Leader ALLEN was flown to
JEVER in a T - 11 from WILDENWRATH, and re-assumed command. |

10th Saturday. |
|
Only the Tiger Moth flew to-day, one sortie. The following pilots returned from
WILDENWRATH. Fg.Off's BELL, COUCH, HICKMAN, Plt.Off's WHITELAW, SENAR,
LEIGH-LANCASTER, and Sgt. KNIGHT. The following pilots went to WILDENWRATH
on Sabre conversion. Fg.Off's WALLACE, HANNAH, HARPER, SANDERSON, PIGDON. |

|
Low cloud restricted flying to a certain extent and the only trips were two QGH trips
in Sabres and one Vampire to BUCKEBURG and back. |

|
Although the weather was slightly improved to-day, the unserviceability of our few
aircraft held up the flying programme. One air test and 3 general flying trips in Sabres
were carried out, in the METEOR one instrument trip and one to BRUGGEN and back
and one air test in a Vampire. |

14th Wednesday. |
|
The cloud base was below 1,000 feet first thing this morning with showers of rain
but in the afternoon two general flying trips in Sabres were carried out, and in the
Meteor one trip to BRUGGEN and back, and one instrument trip. Fg.Off. BELL left to
play Rugby at COLOGNE and Fg.Off. MACKNISH returned from exercise. |

15th Thursday. |
|
This morning there were 6 air tests carried out on Vampires, one general flying in
a Sabre and one Meteor trip to BRUGGEN and back. In the afternoon there was a
Station stand-down for the Easter Grant. Fg. Off's WALLACE and SANDERSON returned
from WILDENWRATH. |

|
The Easter Grant finished at mid-day and in the afternoon one Vampire went to
WILDENWRATH and back and one local flying sortie was carried out in a Sabre. |

21st Wednesday. |
|
The weather was fine to-day but lack of aircraft limited the flying to one local
Sabre trip, 3 Vampire air tests and one local flying in the Tiger Moth. In the afternoon
the Squadron 'A' team won 6-1 at soccer. F.Sgt. TELFER went on leave and Plt.Off's
EXLEY and GARTHWAITE returned from the U.K. and Fg.Off. BELL from COLOGNE. |

There were 7 local flying trips in Sabres to-day, one Vampire went to BRUGGEN and
back and two local flying trips were carried out in the Tiger Moth.

23rd Friday. |
|
The weather was fine again to-day and the aircraft serviceability was better. There
were 14 general flying trips in Sabres, and in Vampires there were trips to FASSBERG,
BRUGGEN, BUCKEBURG and back; one to WUNSTORF and one air test and one trip
to WUNSTORF and back in the Tiger Moth. Fg.Off's PIGDON and HARPER returned
from WILDENWRATH. |

24th Saturday. |
|
There was a Station Commanders Parade followed by an inspection of the hangar
by the Squadron C.O., and no flying took place.
In the afternoon the Squadron 'A' Soccer team won their match 4-1 thus winning the
Station Inter-Section League. The 'B' team lost 6-1 to Tech Wing. |

The 'A' Soccer Team lost their last game of the season 6-3 to the league runners-up
Tech. Wing. Fg.Off. CHADWICK and Plt.Off. RITCHIE returned from leave. |

26th Monday. |
|
The weather was fine to-day and there were 11 general flying trips in Sabres. F. Sgt.
TELFER returned from leave and Squadron Leader ALLEN left for AMSTERDAM.
Fg. Off's REVNELL and CHADWICK and Plt.Off's RITCHIE, EXLEY, DAVIS and
GARTHWAITE went to WILDENWRATH for Sabre conversion. The Squadron 'B' team
lost 4-1. |

|
There were 11 general flying trips in Sabres to-day and the Prentice had one local
trip and a trip to BRUGGEN, WILDENWRATH and back.

|
At 08.00 hours to-day there was a general briefing in the Station Cinema for
EXERCISE WILDGOOSE. There were 4 general flying trips in Sabres this morning
and one local aerobatic sortie in the Prentice. This afternoon there was a stand-down
for a sports afternoon.
Squadron Leader returned, and Plt.Off. CULVER went to BAD EILSEN to collect some
documents. |

|
The weather was fair and 5 general flying trips were carried out this morning. This
afternoon was spent digging in ready for Exercise WILD GOOSE which begins at mid-
night.

Friday. |
|
Exercise WILD GOOSE began at mid-night yesterday and patrols were out over
night guarding the dispersals at the western end of the airfield. At about 02.00 hours
intruders were making attacks to test the defences and find out the weak spots. The
general alarm was raised and a few prisoners were taken. During the day the weather
was fine with broken cloud and 7 aerobatic trips and sector patrols were carried
out. There were frequent attacks on the airfield but the ground defences were not
called into action. |

Throughout this month Squadron pilots have been converting to Sabres at
WILDENWRATH. The squadron returned from a successful attachment at AHLHORN
and operated from its Battle dispersal during the ground defence exercise "WILD
GOOSE". Several S.N.C.O's and Corporals are due for repatriation but despite several
urgent requests for replacements none have arrived yet. |
