R.A.F. Jever 4.8.59        Flying started late this morning as the first three hours were taken up in moving
the servicing line, and pilots equipment to our dispersal location, for the start of the
months dispersal exercise.
     Thanks to last week's initial preparations, when flying did start it went smoothly
and two pairs were kept flying on high level exercises for the rest of the day.

  5.8.59        Dispersal arrangements worked well today, although flying was limited during the
morning by rain and low cloud.   All sorties flown today were high level practice
interception exercises.

  6.8.59        A good days planned flying today.   Exercise Argus took up the morning sorties
and the afternoon was spent on a mixture of high level exercises and syllabus sorties.

  7.8.59        Todays flying included a considerable number of D.M.E. trial flights.   These
were flown on certain radial headings from base in an attempt to map the efficiency of
the Jever beacon.   The opportunity was taken, during these flight, to carry out cine'
quarter attacks.

  8.8.59        The only flying today was one ferry trip, by a visiting pilot, returning one of
our aircraft from C.M.U. to base.

  10.8.59        The day before Battle Flight again.   Flying today was therefore carried out with
tomorrows serviceability in mind and tapered off during the afternoon.

  11.8.59        Battle Flight today, and normal flying of our surplus aircraft with the accent on
practice interceptions and high level battle formations.

  12.8.59        A good days flying today, using the non-battle flight aircraft.   Again no Battle

  13.8.59        No scrambles again today, and other flying was rather reduced due to the service-
ability falling lower than for several days.   Those sorties flown were again at high level.

  14.8.59        Various sorties were flown today with the aircraft not required by Battle Flight.

  17.8.59        The last day of Battle Flight today making a complete week of duty with no scrambles.
Serviceability allowed a good days flying over and above our standby aircraft.

  18.8.59        Today was spent carrying out Air to Ground firing on the Strohen Range, and a total
of fourteen effective sorties were flown, showing and average of 34.75%.

  19.8.59        First detail this morning.   The Squadron provided a section of four aircraft to
take part in a sixteen aircraft low level strike.   The complete formation consisted of
eight Hunters from Royal Air Force Jever, and eight Sabres Mk.6 of No. 430 Canadian

     The remainder of the day was again spent on the Strohen Air to Ground Range, and
with the eleven effective sorties flown, an average of 21% was gained; not quite up to
yesterdays standard, but this was attributed to a strong wind shear.
     During the evening, Flt. Lt. A.A. Boyle was 'Dined Out' at a Squadron Dinner, prior
to his return on posting, to the U.K.

  20.8.59        Normal High Level training for the first part of the day, followed by a 'Broadcast
Control
' Exercise at 1715 hrs. for which one pair of aircraft were provided.   At 1930 hrs,
night flying commenced, and eight successful sorties were flown.

  21.8.59        A day of both high and low level training.   Two 4 plane low level strikes were
carried out during the morning, and two 'Battle Fours' were flown in the afternoon.

  24.8.59        A late start was made today, because of poor visibility; the first take off being at
11.20 hours.   However, by 1610 hrs the Squadron had flown almost sixteen hours.   Effort
today was concentrated on cine' weave in preparation for the forthcoming A.P.S. detach-
ment to Royal Air Force Sylt.

  25.8.59        Almost all todays flying was again spent on Cine' weave practice.   In addition, our
new pilot Flt. Lt. J. Walker was checked out in a Vampire T.11, and an air test was
completed by Sqn Ldr. R.J. Spiers.

  26.8.59        Only half a days flying today, as the Squadron 'stood down' at lunchtime for a
sports afternoon.   Of the eight sorties flown, half were cine' weave training, and the
remainder a mixture of low level strikes, syllabus training and an air test.

  27.8.59        The Squadron took part today in Exercise 'Amled' a large scale N.A.T.O. exercise.
Four aircraft were engaged for the whole of the exercise period, and were in such demand
that they were constantly being scrambled immediately their 'turn rounds' were
completed.   Targets intercepted included Dutch, Belgium, German and Danish F.84 F's and
R.F 84 F's together with some Bomber Command Canberras.
     The Squadron's monthly target was reached this afternoon.

  28.8.59        The only flying carried out today was in the form of a morale booster for the
ground crew, and provided an opportunity to take photographs for this year Squadron
Christmas card.   Eight aircraft in close formation, led by the Squadron Commander, made three runs over the airfield, whilst a Swift from No. 2 Squadron photographed the
'ding'.
     After lunch, all equipment was transferred beck to the hangar at the end of the
months 'Dispersal Exercise'.   This completed, the Squadron stood down for a long week-
end.
