RAF CLUB

128 Piccadilly, London, W1J 7PY.
(100 yards E of Hyde Park Corner tube or 600 yds W of Green Park- Both Piccadilly Line - see map below).

We are back again after the dreaded Covid!!   The lunchtime format seemed to go well so we will continue in that style.   Sadly due to a lack of numbers who could attend, we had cancelled our room at the RAF Club and instead were going to meet at 12:30 hrs in the Running Horse bar in the club basement.   Thanks to the kindness of the RAF Club, they have let us have the Battle of Britain suite for nothing.   In return we need to tell them what we want to eat off the Running Horse Menu.   We will therefore buy our chosen order for food and drinks over the bar as normal but take it back across the corridor to the Battle of Britain Suite to consume.   There are now 19 attendees!   If you change your minds and can make it come and join us!   If you want food, please tell Mick by Friday morning.   Calling Notices went out in April 2022.

122 Wing Jever Steam Laundry Jever

In 2019, the last time we met, 33 attended - 16 from 122 Wg and 17 from 124.   The Golden Share was awarded to Jo Ryan For 5½ years at Jever and regular attendance over many years.

In the past two years we have lost another seven, that we know of, since the AGM in 2019.   Flight Lieutenant Bill Simms, 27Jan18, 4 Sqn pilot Jun53 to after 16Dec55.   Wing Commander Eddie E T Weeks, 15Nov19, Flying Wing, Before Apr59 to after 11May59; Flight Lieutenant John Riley Whittam, 2012, 2 Sqn from before Feb58 to after Jun58; Air Commodore Irene Joyce Harris CB, RRC, OStJ, MIC PMRAFNS 1950-1984, 14Aug21, Head of the Maternity Nursing Unit at RAF Jever from 5Aug58 to 23Jul60; Wing Commander Barry Herbert Dale, 4Jan22, 98 Sqn Hunter pilot from 1Dec56 to 12Jul57 and 4 Sqn from 12Jul57 to 18May59; Squadron Leader John "Jock" McVie. 29Dec21, 4 Sqn pilot only at Oldenburg Nov56; Flight Lieutenant Eric J E Pigdon, 26th January 2022, 93 Sqn Vampire and Sabre pilot from 14Oct53 Sabre Conversion 10-22Apr54 at Wildenwrath then posted from Jever 9Apr57.

Once again I would just like to reiterate and remind relatives of those who have died, regardless of when, that you are very welcome to attend.   Some relatives may have reservations about this, but please do not feel shy, you will be made very welcome.

124 Wing Gutersloh (plus Oldenburg & Ahlhorn)

Fred Daley was able to attend from Koblenz in Germany again in 2019 along with Al Pollock and the Morters.   In fact there were more from 124 Wing than from 122!   Those from 124 Wg that we know have taken their last flight are dear Jim Browne and Jock McVie.   If you know of anyone else please let Mick know.

FOOD

The Club is offering a choice of one of the following three hot dishes:

     1. Steak, Kidney and Mushroom Pie with Roast Potatoes & Vegetables - £22.50

     2. Chicken Curry with Rice and Popadoms - £22.50

     5. And with any of the above, or by itself, Soup of the Day with Roll and Butter - £7.00

When you reply to our Calling Notice, please let Mick know if you want food and what your choices are.   Please pay for it at the bar on the day.   If you are staying at the Club give your room number and it will be charged to your account.   Please try to give Mick an e-mail address, even if it is for a friend or relation who can pass it to you.   The cost of postage was about £35 last year and, this year, of the 182 calling notices that Mick sent out there were still 36 requiring stamps.

ACCOMMODATION

Mick has not reserved any rooms this year at the RAF Club.   If you would still like to stay either before or after, (you do not have to be a member), just let Mick know what type of room you would like.   We recommend that you book early as the club is very successful these days and the rooms go several months ahead for the weekends.   However, RAF Club members can book in to the Cavalry and Guards Club next door or any attender can book into the Caledonian Club (see Alternative Accommodation on the web site).

If mail please return to: Mick Ryan, Far End, Chipstead Lane, Sevenoaks, Kent, TN13 2RG
                                                     Alternative Accommodation

1.  I offer the following suggestions for those who may make a late decision to come and may not be able to gain a room in the Club.

2.  Where web sites exist, I leave those of you on the net to look up the details. I have included some basic information on the accommodation for those not on the net so you will be able to contact the organisation of your choice.

3.  Caledonian Club.   The RAF Club has reciprocal arrangements with other clubs both in UK and overseas for RAF Club members only.   The Caledonian Club is one of them and is within easy walking distance of the Club, being at 9 Halkin Street Belgravia.   [See map below}.   The telephone number is: 020 7235 51662 - however, do not deal direct with the Caledonian Club in the first instance.   I suggest you do that through Mick to avoid any booking cockups.   I have included the number so if you are accommodated there you can contact the Caledonian Club about your personal arrangements.

maponly.jpg, 86299 bytes 4.  Direct Hotels London - www.Hotels.com.   Modestly calls itself the most popular Hotels website for cheap hotels in London.   I suggest that if you are not on the net you ask a relative of friend who is, if you can call and see the website.   It would be easy for the person to book online for you.   There is a map showing where the hotels are. Prices vary according to the 'Star' rating.   If you make a sudden late decision to attend call on 0871-200-01718.

5.  Victory Services Club - www.vsc.co.uk.   The Victory Services Club is a Tri-Service, All Ranks Members' Club for currently serving and retired members of the Armed Forces, ideally located at Marble Arch in the heart of London's West End.   You will need to join (Single membership is £20 per annum through varying other categories to the most expensive Family [joint] £45 per annum).

6.  Even if you are not coming to the AGM, it is worth noting that parents or children of serving or ex-service personnel can join in their own right under one of the membership categories, even though they have not been in any of the armed services. So if you or one of you family take grandchildren (or in our family more accurately termed 'domestic terrorists') to London for treats just once a year you will more than likely break even.   Two visits and you are in the money.    Costs vary: a single room, including breakfast, is £39.50.and at the other end of the scale, a family room en suite with 2 adults plus 1 sprog is £144.50.   If you are not on the net, I suggest you do as I suggested above and ask a relative or friend who is to let you see the website.   You can then do a virtual tour.   It's a really good deal.   Telephone 020-7616-8302.

7.  I hope this information was useful.

  3. Some of the 122 Wing attendees.   Left to right: Ted Bywater, Bill Maish 122 Wing President and Mick Ryan.   Bill, our President, gave a very entertaining description of the origins of the Jever Steam Laundry and the Golden Share.   He also explained how those returning to Jever from the UK, always met up in Dirty Dick's tavern opposite Liverpool Street Station on a Sunday night.   When the boat train was ready to load, i/c Train would call up the passengers from Dirty Dick's.   In those days there was no flying it was Liverpool Street to Harwich to Hook of Holland overnight and then round Germany by train on Monday morning.
  4. The RAF Club served our meals in the Battle of Britain Suite and they did not charge us for the room.   Left to right: Ted Bywater, Mick Ryan, Bill Maish 122 Wing President, Gil Gray and Dickie Barraclough.

  12. Nicholas, Mick Ryan's son has been building a collection of 1/72nd scale models of all the aircraft Mick flew during his life.   Most of them are with the markings and colours of the exact aircraft.   Here are the latest two models; the first type is an Eon bungee-launched glider which were used by school CCFs (one model is with a cowling round the cockpit, the other without).   The second type is a Miles Magister in which Mick first went solo on powered aircraft whilst completing a Flying Scholarship at Rochester Airport.   Carleigh Wright's father made these three excellent models.   Left to right: Fergus Ryan, Mick Ryan and Nicholas Ryan.
  13. Mick Ryan with his three model aircraft.
  14. The Magister model had one of its wheels broken during transit.   Bill Maish suggests here that it accurately represented the standard of Mick''s landings!
  15. The argument continues!   Left to right: Ted Bywater, Mick Ryan, Bill Maish, Gil Gray and Dickie Barraclough's back.
  16. After lunch we gathered again outside the Battle of Britain Suite for some group photos.   Left to right: Petra Daley, Fred Daley President of 124 Wing, Dickie Barraclough, Gil Gray, Ted Bywater holding his Golden Share, Bill Maish President of 122 Wing, Mick Ryan and Jo Ryan.
  17. All attendees.   Left to right, back row: Carleigh Wright, Fred Daley President of 124 Wing, Petra Daley, Dickie Barraclough, Chris Barraclough, Gil Gray, Ted Bywater, Bill Maish President of 122 Wing, Mick Ryan, Jo Ryan, Claire Prout, Rebecca Prout and Gio Battistel.   Kneeling row: Ali Ryan, Fergus Ryan, Nicholas Ryan and Julia Prout.
  18. After lunch, Mick took those interested on a short tour of the RAF Club facilities.   Halfway round he was pictured in front of the stained glass memorial window at the end of the ground floor central corridor.
  19. His Granddaughter insisted that Mick posed in front of 93 Squadron badge - top row directly above his head.   Along the first floor corridor are all the badges of the RAF squadrons.
  20. The"Escarbuncle" in the centre of the 93 Squadron badge was also painted on the side of the aircraft.
  21. Finally we all gathered in the Cowdray Lounge for refreshments.   Left to right: Gil Gray, Ted Bywater, Nicholas Ryan, Chris Barraclough's back, Bill Maish President of 122 Wing and Dickie Barraclough.
