Ginger Ratcliffe unhurt, but aircraft W/O.   (Click to see F540 report).   (Click to see Flight Comment report).   Colin Cumming's book "Category Five" reports it as follows: "The aircraft took off and entered a climbing turn, entering cloud at about 2,000 feet.   There was a loud explosion in the engine bay and loss of power and automatic reversion to manual control.   The pilot Flight Sergeant T L Ratcliffe 33, was unable to make a distress call because the radio failed.   The aircraft broke cloud and the pilot finding himself over the sea, decided to eject and pulled the canopy jettison handle but it did not work.   The pilot was left with no alternative but to make a forced landing and this he did on a beach.   However, only two wheels came down and the aircraft was extensively damaged.   Tragically, Ratcliffe was killed in January 1967, when as a Master Pilot, he flew into high ground in a 4Sqn Hunter FR10".

Fg Off John Jack, on overshoot at Jever with dive brakes extended, aircraft flicked over at slow speed and rolled into the ground. Pilot killed. Click to see accident report.   Colin Cummings Book "Category Five" reports it as follows: "After overshooting from a controlled descent, the aircraft executed a climbing turn to port at low speed, with the undercarriage retracted and the dive brakes out, to a height of about 2,000 feet, whilst turning through 90 degrees.   It then seemed to flick rapidly and to roll and lose height until it struck the ground.   The most probable cause was the loss of control at low speed and the failure to retract the dive brakes.   Fg Off John Jack aged 24 killed.3 miles south south west of Jever."
