Thanks to Barry Golden added photo of RAF Museum Cosford plaque for 93 Sqn Sabre F.4 XB812 U on display upside down. XB812 was part of a batch of 370 Canadair Sabre F.4s allocated to the RAF on 14Oct52. First flight 16Apr53 at Cartierville, Montreal with RCAF serial number 19666. Flown to 5MU Kemble on 3Jun53 for application of a camouflage finish to the natural metal along with acceptance tests and the modification of the navigation equipment. Joined 112 Sqn at Bruggen on 29Jan54. Arrived on 93 Sqn on Tue 11 May 1954 and was passed to 33 MU Lyneham when the Squadron UEs were reduced on Wed 1 Jun 1955. It has been pointed out that in the museum it has fixed leading edge slats whereas during its time on 93 Sqn, like all 93 Sqn Sabres, it had retractable slats on the leading edge. 4 Sqn Sabres, on the other hand, at the same time had fixed leading edges. The slats were dangerous as occasionally only one side would come out. This is believed to have happened to Dave Scott when he was pulling out during ground attack at the Meppen range and he was subsequently killed. After the RAF, XB812 was sold to Turkey and then finally recovered to the RAF museum from the Italian Air Force where it was being used as a training airframe in an Italian mechanics school. By this time, somewhere along the way, it was modified and the retractable slats were replaced by "hard" leading edges as it is now displayed. [Backlog 21Nov14] (Click to see.) |

Thanks to the RAF Museum added 93 Sqn Linebook No. 2 - Page 73 I think it was Pete Raeburn who fell off the back of a lorry and broke his arm. This was some time after 17Jan59 as the bottom half refers to the web master Mick Ryan's first purchase of a motor car - a light blue Volkswagon Beetle. Jeremy Hall and I went up to Kiel by train to collect it. Very brave of Jeremy since I had never driven a car before. I arrived on the squadron never having had a driving licence. The Boss, Paddy Minnis, was a bit taken aback when I was made Officer i/c Transport as my secondary squadron duty and I explained that I could not drive. There I was driving a 10,00 lb thrust Hunter round the skies of Germany but couldn't drive a car. I was immediately dispatched to the M.T. Yard where I was taught to drive on a 3½ ton Magirus-Deutz lorry with a crash gearbox. My wife says it still shows in my current driving skills! [No Backlog] (Click to see.) |

I think it would be very nice if you write me a letter back, I hope it! We were drinking too much last Saturday, excuse me! Many Greetings and good luck! Sincerely yours, Trive Smit. My address in Basle is Trive Smit, c/o Dr Klaus Trelin, Birmannsgasse 11, Basle, Switzerland." Other irreverent comments on the page of the linebook to which the letter was attached are: "For this little boy... A day's happiness." "Young girls beware" I hope "Bot" is looking after that spare aircraft alright?" "It's a lame tale." "FAN MAIL..about a 1,000 letters a day from all over." Dear Mr Talbot, I hope that you excuse my letter. I don't know, if you remember me. last Saturday night I was in the Victoria-National? Hotel with my brother. You came in at one o'clock in the morning and gived me a sixpence with your inscription. It was very nice to meet you and so I went Monday to your Hotel to ask your address in Germany or England. "I knew what a burden I'd be. But I grew steadily stronger and my love could not be hidden forever. Before I knew what had happened we became engaged. None of our relatives thought it was wise. How wrong they have been proved." There is this constant delight of two wonderful looking human beings hopelessly and savagely involved..." "I am one of those people whose innocence has not yet been put to the test". "But I tell you - I'm just a family man at heart." I bet Joe found this very helpful in his courting days - but he eventually happily married Margaret his PMRAFNS nurse! There was quite a stir when the traditionally all-male Officers' Mess had to admit females when the PMRAFNS nurses were posted to RAF Jever to form a maternity unit. The previously nearest service hospital at RAF Wegberg closed and the maternity unit on the base was necessary as the next hospital was too far away to be used for births to service wives. Half the mess members objected to the presence of females in their mess and the other half - mainly the squadron pilots - were delighted and made them very welcome! The senior nurse Flight Officer Joy Harris went on to become Matron-in-Chief of the PMRAFNS. [No Backlog] (Click to see.) |

These e seemed to enjoy, but e did not eat more than three or four a day. At night I spread a newspaper on my bedroom floor and e used to patter round the room quite happily. At the end of a week it was time to return to London. In company with my young nephew and niece, and all of us greatly excited, I took h on to the beach and let h free beside a large pool left by the tide. e was delighted and immediately took to the water, rising, ucking, flapping h and shaking and spraying the water over h self." Thanks to Martin Painter we have received the following information and appeal to those interested about a memorial that is being erected to two WWII 118 Sqn Spitfire pilots. Martin Painter writes: "I live in Seagry near Chippenham in Wiltshire and the village is planning to construct and dedicate a memorial to two 118 Sqn Spitfire pilots, John Brewster and Harold Williams later this summer. The flying accident happened over Seagry Wiltshire on Sunday 6th April 1941 and involved Spitfires X4822 and X4826. In researching the fatal accident, I have made contact with John Wheelwright who is John Brewster's nephew and we have exchanged documents and information. I decided to contact you to see if you knew if any of those original pilots or ground view were still alive and secondly to enquire if members of 118 Squadron would be interested in being kept informed of the project and possible attending the dedication which we expect around 7th to 14th of September 2014. Thanks to the RAF Museum added 93 Sqn Linebook No. 2 - Page 57 Letter: From:- Admiralty. To:- Lt Young R.N. Date:- 5th July 1957. Ref.:- INT/ORG.RU12/WC. CONTRAVENTION OF ADMIRALTY ORDERS 1. It has come to the attention of their Lordships that the above-mentioned has committed a unforgivable breach of Admiralty Orders by the wearing of certain non-standard items of service clothing. 2. It is felt by their Lordships that this is much to be deplored as it may interpreted as a reduction in standards to those which prevail in that junior Service with whom the above-mentioned is serving. It must always be the ambition of every Senior Service Officer to inculcate his couthness and high degree of social behaviour to those among whom he serves, by his own personal example. 3. Evidence of the failure of the above-mentioned to observe these standards, is overwhelming in the form of this photograph which was found in an empty gin bottle on Waterloo station. 4. It is therefore the command of their Lordships that the above-mentioned be removed from his present place of work and be posted to GOOSE BAY there to command the Royal Naval Land Yacht Test Station, at present investigating the application of the Area Rule Formula to Naval Land Yachts. 5. Sand shoes and armoured jock straps are to be drawn from the nearest Naval Barracks, which constitute the permanent rig of the day in GOOSE BAY, and must be rigidly adhered to. News-clipping says: Gorilla to tea - Mr John Aspinall's pet gorilla which he keeps at his Kent home, was taken out to tea in Canterbury last week. Clinging to the back of a woman member of Mr Aspinall's staff, the gorilla went into a fashionable tea house. Two or three customers left immediately in some disorder. The reaction of other customers the proprietress tells me varied between "surprised and pained". She adds; "There was no need for me to take any action as the gorilla was extremely well-behaved all the time. Anyway, I have no rules banning gorillas from the tea-rooms. It certainly loved the home-made cakes." Caption under the centre picture: "It has an ape-like face , manlike limbs, probably walks semi-erect. It has a larger jaw and a higher brow than apes." Thanks to the RAF Museum added 93 Sqn Linebook No. 2 - Page 50 This obviously commemorates a hairy aerobatic performance by the 93 Sqn Hunter formation aeros team, Fleche D'Or, at Ypenburg Air Base in the Netherlands on 10 June 1957. It appears to have been performed in a thunderstorm. Ypenburg Airport (Dutch: Vliegveld Ypenburg), which later became Ypenburg Air Base was an airport in the Netherlands near the city of The Hague. The ICAO code was EHYP. History: The airfield was established in 1936, initially for recreational purposes. At the beginning of World War II German forces attempted to capture the airfield, in 1940, via an airborne landing during the Battle for The Hague. This failed however and Dutch forces recaptured the airfield. After the Netherlands eventually surrendered to Germany, the Luftwaffe made no use of the airfield during the remainder of the war. After the war the field remained a civilian airport until 1955, when it was turned into an Air Base. After 1968, operations decreased significantly; the Air Base was used mainly as a VIP airport for politicians and the royal family. In 1982 it was decided to close the Air Base, but it was not until 1992 that it was abandoned by the Royal Netherlands Air Force. Among the last aircraft to use the airport were military cargo aircraft heading towards Kuwait during the Gulf War. In 1997 a new residential area was constructed on the site of the airport, Leidschenveen-Ypenburg. Very little remains of the airport today, the former air traffic control tower being a notable exception. [No Backlog] (Click to see.) |

Thanks to the Jerry and Beccy Lockspeiser, his children, we learnt the sad news that their father David Lockspeiser has flown his last flight. He died on Sunday March 23rd peacefully at home with them at his side and other family members nearby. David had been battling pulmonary fibrosis for several years. Thanks to his fighting spirit and excellent care he lived longer and better than expected. By last Sunday the time had come for him to use the ejector seat. The funeral will be held at 1.30pm on Wednesday April 9th at Aldershot Crematorium, Guildford Rd, Aldershot, Hampshire GU12 4BP and will followed by a gathering nearby. No flowers please. Those wishing to may make a donation to the RAF Benevolent Fund by sending a cheque to them at 67 Portland Place, London W1B 1AR. David had a wide network of friends and contacts and pursued his interests through several organisations and clubs. Please feel free to forward this notification to others who may like to know. Thanks to the RAF Museum added 93 Sqn Linebook No. 2 - Page 48 NORDENEY INCIDENT Hard, Sam and R.N. were strolling back from the beach & the cracker harmlessly minding their own business & looking at fetlocks when they were lured by the devil in the form of the galloping Major Barton and a 101 S.U. reprobate Ginger Lacey into the Germania Hotel. "You must have lobster - its an experience - this was crawling over the bar 20 minutes ago," "- no not really expensive - about a pound the man said." "I think we will stay here its bloody nice and the you can really taste the sherry in the soup". THE BOYS WERE PERSUADED TO HAVE TWO LOBSTERS BY THE WAITER - BEFORE THEY ARRIVED, THE GALLOPING MAJOR'S BILL CAME - 45 D.M. (At Jan2014 prices=£83.18
). EXIT MAJOR AND GINGER FROM THE HOTEL AND ISLAND. SAM BEGINS TO WONDER WHEN WE WILL HAVE TO START WASHING UP. SAM DOESN'T LIKE LOBSTER ANYWAY BUT HE NOW KNOWS THEY ARE NOT JUST WARM BLOODED RED CREATURES THAT YOU KNOCK ON THE HEAD AND EAT RAW WHEN THEY HAVE COOLED. (Their total bill for 1,750 grms (about 4 lbs) of lobster, a salad and 9 beers came to DM85.80 or £7 5s 11d then and at Jan2014 prices today=£158.66 - the lobster alone cost £31.87 per lb at today's prices. The salad cost, at today's prices, £4.62 and the beers were £7.16 each). [No Backlog] (Click to see.) |
