319 Thanks to Joachim Linke added a picture that recorded that during the visit back to GAF Jever in October 2010, George Beaton noticed that the only plaque from an RAF Squadron that was based at RAF Jever that was mounted on the walls of the bar was from 2 Sqn.   When George returned to UK, he ordered a new 4 Sqn plaque and had it sent to Joachim Linke via Mick Ryan.   Joachim asked the GAF Jever staff to add the new plaque alongside the 2 Sqn plaque.   Not only did they do that but they also moved both of them down lower from the 2 Sqn position up in the corner.   [Backlog: 9May10 280 days ]

309 Thanks to Richard Chadwick, his son, we have heard the sad news that Dave Chadwick has passed away on Thursday 2nd Decemmber 2010.   Richard tells us: "His funeral took place on the 16th, Flying Officer "Tinker" W E Bell was in attendance and did a reading as a tribute to my father, he spoke fondly of 93 Squadron and the adventures he and my father had enjoyed whilst in Jever.   It was a very strange occurrence that on the day my father died my nephew typed in "Flight Lieutenant Dave D S Chadwick" in Google and found your web site, unfortunately too late for my father to see it.   However, myself and other family members have really enjoyed looking through the site and seeing Dad at such a young age doing amazing things and having such a good start to life in the RAF.   It's a great shame Dad didn't see it because I know he would have thoroughly enjoyed the memories of his time at Jever.   "Tinker" and other family members have expressed a great interest in seeing it.   I would just like to thank you and the other contributors for taking the time to make up the web site which must have taken some considerable effort and to let you know it has served as a great comfort to myself and my family to see what an exciting and enjoyable life my father had in 93 Squadron.   [Backlog: 9May10 233 days ]   (Click to see.)

300 Thanks to Toby Iles added a Video showing M18-19 clip from Brian Iles's film of his return flight from RAF Jever to Bulawayo, Africa in his Miles M-18 light aircraft beginning on Tuesday 20th July 1954 and starting their return on Monday 16th August 1954.   This clip shows the final shots of sightseeing in Athens.   At 1020 hrs on Thursday 26th August 1954 they took off from Athens and flew via Araxos to Brindisi where they landed at 14:15 hrs.   After a night's rest they left Brindisi early at 0605 hrs on Friday 27th August 1954 and landed at Rome (Urbe) three hours later.   I think the next shot of a car driving along a road beside a river is probably taken in Rome - but does anyone recognise the monument on the other side of the river?   They obviously did some sightseeing in Rome, including St Peter's Square in front of the Vatican, but after six and a quarter hours they were airborne again from Rome at 1515 hrs that afternoon.   [Backlog: 9May10 179 days ]   (Click to see.)

191 Thanks to Wilf Crutchley added a photo of the wreath Wilf Crutchley ordered for John Freeborn's Celebration of Life at Southport Crematorium on Tuesday 7th September 2010.   Although on the photograph the flowers appear to be cream they are actually white (118 colours black and white).   His daughter Julia brilliantly set the ceremony up.   As the hearse pulled into the crematorium there was a flash of lightning and really good clap of thunder (I think he organised that).   The coffin was draped in the union flag , on it was a wreath of red poppies around his medals.   As the coffin was lifted from the hearse it was carried through the Guard of Honour with its Standard paraded by the local Aircrew Association including George Aird, while the Royal Air Force march was played.   During the service Bob Cossey secretary of 74 told of John's time on 74 the Battle of Barking creek and his part in the Battle of Britain, followed by a brief outline of the rest of his RAF career.   Emily Stride read the quotation from the RAF memorial window.   After the committal the Last Post was played as the Standard was dipped in salute.   A very moving moment.   There was to be a Spitfire flypast but the thunder storm and the low cloud ruled it out.   [Backlog: 28Apr10 134 days ]   (Click to see.)

135 You may have noticed that the "Return Trip" page of Brian Iles M-18 flight from Bulawayo to Jever has become very slow to load.   This is because there are so many video clips on one "page".   It has to load all of them before it can run the last clip and this takes a long time.   So I have split the return trip up into several "pages" with no more than two clips per page and anyone of them should now load quickly.   [Backlog: 27Feb10 168 days ]   (Click to see.)

75 Thanks to Lt Col Joachim Linke we have refined the details of the visit back to Jever.   I have incorporated all the changes in the new brief.   Mainly, we are concentrating on Thursday on Jever as Wittmundhaven is closed for runway re-surfacing.   The GAF has generously offered to collect us in their coach, (they are very luxurious - not at all like our old buses!), from the Schutzenhof for the Jever tour and back and also collect us and return us from the Schutzenhof to Aurich/Brockzetel on the Friday.   I am proposing an evening meal for us all and our guests in the Officers' Mess on Thursday evening, as we did last time as an opportunity to thank our hosts.   More details in the next item above.   We now know that there is an evening event in Aurich to which we have been invited, and therefore I have changed my flights to return on Saturday.   [Backlog: 26Feb10 124 days ]   (Click to see.)

24 Thanks to Maurice Parker added a photo taken at RAF Jever 111 Sqn Formation Aeros Team passing through and being turned round by ASF on their way to an air display at Rygge, Norway - probably Fri 22May59.   Thanks to research by David Watkins and Peter Latham we have learnt the following: Peter Latham says "I can find no trace of ever flying Hunter 6 'X' in 1959.   My Jever flights in 1959 were: 6/7 May, Meteor 7 (pre show recce for Rygge); 9/11 May in Hunter 6 'R' was not Bitburg but Wiesbaden; 22/25 Hunter 6 'N' Show at Rygge via Jever; 6/7 June Hunter 6 'T' show at Jever.   I did not begin using Hunter 6 'X' as my regular mount until 15 March 1960 and then only until I needed to maximise the size of the formation by using the Hunter T7."   This is what Peter had to say about the silver Hunter trainer: "I first flew Hunter T7 'Z' on the return trip from a show over Lisbon on 11th June 1959, and I first lead the team with it on a rehearsal on 7th July 1959 with a Mr Blackburn, who was the Daily Express senior photographer, who used a portable panoramic camera to get some great pictures.   The first show I lead with it, by then in black livery, was on 9th September for the SBAC Farnborough show and thereafter I used it on most displays and rehearsals."   Pete wrote further: "I am trying to get a definitive answer to your question and should soon get replies from those with better memories than me.   The photo of the T7 shows a black drop tank so I presume that it was ours or a borrowed one.   I did not start leading with the T7 until August/September 1959 so it is likely that we did not go to the expense of painting it black until then.   Leading with the T7 was not easy as the off-set seat and shape of the windscreen top frame made keeping the loop straight when the horizon was out of sight difficult.   With a minimum of 14 aircraft for every display, and sometimes 18, the arrival loop and the final landing double loop had a frontage of 9 aircraft the same as Roger Topp's 22.   If I twisted the loop it gave great pain to the outer wing men and would spoil the appearance of the formation.   I had a vertical mounted slip and skid instrument fitted to the left of the gunsight but eventually overcame the problem by practice and concentration and had it removed.   Subsequently Brian Mercer told David Watkins: "Brian thinks that it was on 22 May, while the aircraft were en-route to Rygge, Norway."   Hunter T.7 XL610 Z belonging to 111 Sqn which was first flown by Hugh Merewether on 12Nov58.   Central Fuselage C/N 41H-695344.   Delivered on 23Jan59 to No 111 Sqn. ('Z') at Wattisham Stn Flt.   Crashed, hit ground at N. Kelsey; both pilots killed 7Jun62.   [Backlog: 26Feb10 47 days ]   (Click to see.)
23 Thanks to Maurice Parker added a photo taken at RAF Jever 111 Sqn Formation Aeros Team passing through and being turned round by ASF on their way to an air display at Rygge, Norway - 22May59.   Careful examination of the original photo shows this to be Hunter F.6 R (on the nosewheel door).   Pete Latham reports the following: "My Jever flights in 1959 were: 6/7 May, Meteor 7 (pre show recce for Rygge); 9/11 May in Hunter 6 'R' was not Bitburg but Wiesbaden; 22/25 Hunter 6 'N' Show at Rygge via Jever; 6/7 June Hunter 6 'T' show at Jever.   I did not begin using Hunter 6 'X' as my regular mount until 15 March 1960 and then only until I needed to maximise the size of the formation by using the Hunter T7."   So although the cockpit markings look like the Boss, Pete Latham's aircraft, he seems to have been flying 'N' at Rygge on that occasion?   [Backlog: 26Feb10 47 days ]   (Click to see.)
