Ken Sambrooks says the one thing he now recalls about the exercise was all the aircraft on dispersal really well camouflaged when the well camouflaged NAAFI van arrived and a big queue formed on the taxiway just as a recce plane from the opposition flew over in a low sweep. Could be a noisy place to try to sleep sometimes!
- Solution to mystery of the location of the old Officers' Club in downtown Jever. Thanks to Maurice Parker, our local sleuth and ambassador, we now have a map of its location and some pictures of what it looks like today. It is/was on the main road in to Jever town half way from the railway crossing to the town centre.

- Target Towing Meteor 8s at Sylt - Aug55. Notice the Flight Refuelling probe on the nose which Roger Lindsay tells me is from the time it took part in the trials with 245 Sqn. Johnny Macknish says that he cannot recall that there were any differences in the handling characteristics between the 'standard' or 'probe' Mark 8's. Most of his experiences during the three months or so that he was with the TT squadron at the end of his service time was spent towing target flags up and down the ranges to the west of Sylt. Although there were the odd occasions when one was free of a flag when it was possible to let rip and get back to real flying! Roger Lindsay tells us that the APS at Sylt inherited about eleven former 245 Sqn trials with the In-Flight Refuelling probed F.8s but good pictures of them are rare! He says that the gun camera was repositioned because of the probe, and originally these aircraft had a switch in the cockpit to permit the pilot to control the fuel flow when 'tanking', but this may have been removed before the aircraft were issued to Sylt. Johnny cannot remember there being a switch relating to air refuelling as the system was redundant and therefore 'out of mind'.

- The Critics holding judgement on John Davis's crash in a Sabre in the undershoot - 1Oct55. L to R: Ron Gray 4, Fred Maycock 4, Eric Pigdon 93, Snowy Ewens 4. Eric Pigdon had just landed from a Vampire T.11 trip with OC Flying, after hearing about the crash on the radio. They rushed round the airfield in the OC Flying's VW to examine the site. When working out how the Sabre had arrived at it's present position they were puzzled how the ground tracks managed to go either side of a complete telephone post. Eventually they found out that in the short time from landing the German Bundespost had already replaced the telegraph pole which the Sabre had flattened! Maybe it is the pole in the background?
- The Johnny Davis's prang with 93 Sqn aircraft on 1Oct55. Johnny had a flame out in Xb822 and after getting into the correct position for his forced landing he lost it while digging for the lavatory chain to drop the undercarriage. Designed from the start to carry out three tasks - all-weather interception, close support and high-altitude bombing - the Sud Ouest SO.4050 Vautour (Vulture) first flew on 16Oct52. Two production versions were ordered, the Vautour IIB light bomber and the IIN all-weather interceptor. The first of 70 Vautour IINs entered service in 1956 with the 6e Escadre de Chasse, followed by EC 30 in the following year, while the first of the 40 Vautour IIBs entered service in Dec57 with 1/92 'Bourgogne' and 2/92 'Aquataine' at Bordeaux. The final version of the Vautour was the IIBR, a bomber-reconnaissance variant. The close-support version of the Vautour, the IIA, was not used by the French Air Force, but 20 examples were supplied to Israel, together with four IINs, and saw action in the Six-Day War of 1967. Specifications apply to the Vautour IIB: Crew: 2; Powerplant: two 3,500 kg (7,716 lb) thrust SNECMA Atar 101E-3 turbojet engines. Performance: max speed 1,102 km/hr (685 mph); range 2,575 km (1,600 miles); service ceiling: 15,000 m (49,200 ft). - Video showing CS-01 a clip from Chris Stone's film taken during a 93 Sqn detachment to Sylt for APC Gunnery Camp - Apr/May59. It starts with a Meteor dropping a target flag over the airfield filmed above a line-up of the Hunter F.6s at Sylt and Chris Stone arrives in XJ645 E and unstraps. The groundcrew are then seen to change over the ADEN gun packs. There are no blast deflectors fitted on the four ADEN's and the gun muzzles are surrounded by soot from the cartridges. In the background a Meteor is seen dropping a flag on the airfield so that the bullet holes can be counted and the pilot given his score. The clip finishes with an armed gun pack being winched into position. Note the word "green" written on the fuselage by the Hunter intake. I suspect this is to indicate the colour of the paint on the bullet tips for this aircraft. As the bullets passed through the flag they leave a smudge of coloured paint on the flag so that the score can be contributed to the correct aircraft and pilot. (2 mins)

The shot pans across John Lakeman, an Opel Rekord and a Danish Air Force officer who presumably was hosting them during their visit. The clip finishes with a pair of Danish Hunters taxying out and then taking off at Jever, shot from the 93 Sqn Ops Room window. (1 min 5 secs)

- Car Ferry Timetable from Blexen to Bremerhaven. Very useful shortcut if either returning a car to UK from Bremerhaven or collecting a car imported from outside Germany via Bremerhaven. A trip many a proud owner made when buying a new car in Germany. There was no UK tax to pay on a new car if you kept it abroad for one year. That was why, when the squadrons disbanded so many pilots were kept on until their cars had qualified for the one year. This caused a backlog of new pilots coming in to RAF Germany. Mick Ryan was one who on arrival found that there had not been a new pilot officer for about 18 months.

- Video showing CS-05 a clip from Chris Stone's film taken when 93 Sqn were working up for the Wing Flypast for the AOC's Inspection - Thu 5May60. The clip opens with shots of Hunter F.6 A XG272 on the 93 Sqn hardstanding in front of Hangar 4. There is a close up of Chris Stone's name on the side of his aircraft. Next there is a shot of Brian Butterworth in 93 Sqn's Operations Room as he walks past Chris Stone reclining on the Ops Desk and then showing Mick Ryan signing for his aircraft. If this is the right day it was when Mick acted as "Whipper In" to marshal the shape of the flypast. He did not fly on the actual day of the inspection which was Tuesday 10th May 1960. Next we see the 93 Sqn Hunters starting up, taxying out and taking off. There are then several flypasts in four vics of five aircraft each. It finishes with a single still taken of Chris Stone's low-level aerobatics display. - Video showing CS-06 a clip from Chris Stone's film taken on 93 Sqn when there was a challenge race between the groundcrew and the aircrew to see who could change an empty ADEN gun pack on the Hunter F.6 for a full gun pack. The opening scene on the hard standing in front of Hangar 4 shows a group gathered to witness the event: Wg Cdr Nick Bowen (OC Flying); Sqn Ldr Olaf Bergh (OC 93 Sqn), and pilots Jeremy Hall, Timber Wood, Barrie Tonkinson, plus one other pilot (back towards) believed to be John Haig. There is also an unknown bald-headed gentleman in civvies. In scene 2 Peter Arthur walks towards the camera. He is (thankfully!) i/c the pilot team comprising Mick Ryan, Dennis Fahey and John Haig. In scene 3 The fresh gun packs are wheeled into place and then we see the Pilots team on the starting blocks. Scene 5 shows a Stop watch (held by Timber Wood) starting, and the race is on - pilots on aircraft 'W', and armourers on aircraft 'R'. Scene 6 Stop watch at 40 seconds. Scene 7 Pilot team work frantically! Stop watch (cannot determine seconds). Scene 8 Dennis Fahey removes ladder (at last!) - and "Flash" Haig lives up to his nick name! Scene 9 Armourers appear to calmly finish. OCFW and OC 93 look on at the pilot's team, as John Haig replaces the final sabrina. (2 mins 11 secs)

Next Barry Tonkinson in his No. 1 uniform arrives and enters the Operations Room caravan. Then there is a shot of a Hunter landing on the runway and two taxying in to dispersals. We think this was Jun60 rather than Aug59 as the Hunters have yellow painted wing tips. (1 min 17 secs)

- RAF Museum Cosford plaque for 93 Sqn Sabre F.4 XB812 U on display upside down. XB812 was part of a batch of 370 Canadair Sabre F.4s allocated to the RAF on 14Oct52. First flight 16Apr53 at Cartierville, Montreal with RCAF serial number 19666. Flown to 5MU Kemble on 3Jun53 for application of a camouflage finish to the natural metal along with acceptance tests and the modification of the navigation equipment. Joined 112 Sqn at Bruggen on 29Jan54. Arrived on 93 Sqn on Tue 11 May 1954 and was passed to 33 MU Lyneham when the Squadron UEs were reduced on Wed 1 Jun 1955. It has been pointed out that in the museum it has fixed leading edge slats whereas during its time on 93 Sqn, like all 93 Sqn Sabres, it had retractable slats on the leading edge. 4 Sqn Sabres, on the other hand, at the same time had fixed leading edges. The slats were dangerous as occasionally only one side would come out. This is believed to have happened to Dave Scott when he was pulling out during ground attack at the Meppen range and he was subsequently killed. After the RAF, XB812 was sold to Turkey and then finally recovered to the RAF museum from the Italian Air Force where it was being used as a training airframe in an Italian mechanics school. By this time, somewhere along the way, it was modified and the retractable slats were replaced by "hard" leading edges as it is now displayed.
