Thanks to Jack Goldthorpe added a photo of an unknown VIP aircraft visitor to Jever sometime in 1958. This has the French Air Force colours and may have carried a VIP mission visiting the German Navy at Wilhelmshaven? Anyone know the occasion? The aircraft is a: SNCASO Sud-Ouest SO.30P Bretagne The SO.30 Bretagne twin-engined transport was designed in the early part of World War II, in spite of the difficulties facing the project given the German occupation of France. Indeed, the two prototypes were damaged during Allied bombardment of Cannes. It was resurrected once peace had been restored. In its definitive form, the SO.30P, the aircraft first flew on 11 December 1947. The subsequent production run totalled 45 examples, four of which were used for a time by Air France. Eight SO.30Ps served with Air Algerie and 12 with Air Maroc. Some were bought by charter companies, continuing in service for a number of years. Others were operated, sometimes under charter, by units of the French Air Force's Transport Command. Crew: 2; Powerplant: two 1,209kW (1,620hp) Pratt & Whitney R-2800-B43 Double Wasp 14-cylinder radial engines; Performance: Max speed 416kph (258mph); Range: 1,500km (932 miles); Service ceiling: 6,500m (21,325ft).Dimensions: Wingspan: 26.89m (88ft 3in); Length: 18.95m (62ft 2in); Height: 5.89m (19ft 4in); Weight: 18,900Kg (39,881lb) loaded; Payload: 30-37 passengers. Thanks to Mike Wraight added a photo of a target towing Tempest at 118 Sqn's Sylt APC - Jan54. Hawker Tempest V: First flown in 1943, the Hawker Tempest V was the fastest and most powerful fighter in the world when it entered RAF service in April 1944. Two months later the Tempest squadrons were assigned to the defence of Great Britain, operating against the V-1 flying bombs which were being launched against London. The Tempest's high speed made it the ideal interceptor in this new role. The Tempest squadrons subsequently moved to the continent with 2nd TAF. Crew: 1; Powerplant: one 1,686Kw (2,260 hp) Napier Sabre IIA, IIB or IIC 24-cylinder H type engine; Performance: max speed 700km/h (435mph); range 2,092km (1,300miles); service ceiling 10,975m (36,000ft); Dimensions: wing span 12.5 m (41ft); length 10.26m (22ft 8in); height 4.9m (16ft 1in); Weight: 6,187kg (13,640lb) loaded; Armament: four 20mm (0.79in) Hispano Mk V cannon; external stores up to 907kg (2,000lb). Thanks to Jill Warby added photo of 2 Sqn's Meteor FR.9 WB124 V safely landed after a mid-air collision with Meteor FR.9 WH542 at Geilenkirchen during a flypast on 15Mar56. Flight Comment, 2ATAF's Flight Safety magazine reported the incident as follows: " MAJOR WH542 & WB124, 15March CAT. 3 & 2. These aircraft are taking part in a special squadron formation of twelve which entailed the last four flying in line abreast. (Web Master: Probably the base-line of a formation forming a Number 2 as is shown in the inset from a later flypast with only three in the base line?) During a run over the airfield the middle pair of the four in line abreast collided, the wing-tip of one striking the outside of the nacelle of the other. Both landed safely at base. COMMENT: It is agreed by all concerned that both these aircraft hit the slipstream of the aircraft ahead at the same time, and in trying to recover control they collided. For this to happen, either the section leader on whom they were formating was insuffuiciently stepped down, or the two aircraft in question were out of position, or possibly a combination of the two took place. This has not been resolved. However the moral is obvious - slipstream can be (and could have been here) an invisible killer, and it is basic airmanship to be wary of its effects." Meteor FR.9 WB124 V was delivered to 2 Sqn Fri 11Mar55 and declared Cat 4R on Fri 11May56. [Backlog: 17Apr11 315 days ] (Click to see.) |

Thanks to Maurice Parker added photo now it can be told! Like a fool that he is, Mick Ryan our Web master, left for the final ceremonies at Aurich in the bright sunlight of midday, only wearing a blazer. That evening, by the time the Searchlight Tattoo had been held up for an hour, sitting on a bench in the dark, Mick got very, very cold. Shivering uncontrollably he eventually excused himself and tried to find a restaurant to warm up. He must have looked even worse than usual because the military police rapidly handed him over to a military ambulance hidden in the corner of the parade. This lovely blonde German military nurse in this picture, (taken earlier in the day in the town centre), and her female doctor colleague, wrapped Mick in a blanket in the back of the ambulance and cuddled him until he thawed out. When Pat King eventaully found him, having been "talked in" in the dark on Mick's mobile phone, he found Mick recovered enough to be escosrted by the nurse all the way back to our coach. Pat's only comment was "Some people will do anything to get up close to a blonde!". [Backlog: 11Nov10 427 days ] (Click to see.) |

Thanks to Mike Wraight added a photo of Venom WE413 A-R hood shattered in flight. A later incident was described in Flight Comment Jul56 as follows: "Descending at 0.82M at 20,000 ft., the cockpit canopy of this Venom flew open and shattered. The air blast removed the pilot's bone dome and a piece of perspex penetrated the tailplane. The failure of the taper pins in the winding mechanism which caused this and two previous accidents, will be overcome by Mod. 929, which is being issued this month." This aircraft did not arrive on the squadron until 27Oct53. This may have been one of the two previous incidents as Mike Wraight arrived on 118 Sqn in May53 and from the position of these photographs in his album it was before their Sylt detachment in Jul54. Anyone know more about this incident? [Backlog: 9May10 592 days ] (Click to see.) |

Thanks to Brian Thornton who challenged my wrong identification of a Hunter engine as an Avon203. This caused me to re-examine the photo of a dis-membered F.4. Hunter F.4 on display in Tech Wing for the Open Day on 19Jun57. There was some doubt as to whether this was at the 1957 Open Day. [Resolved as 57 - click to see]. None of the 4 Hunter squadrons at Jever, 4, 93, 98 or 118 had an aircraft with a tail letter of G and the number ending in 84. There was one aircraft which was numbered XE684 and it looks like a 6 on the main wheel fairing. The number on the rear fuselage, partly obscured by the airman's head, looks like a W but could be an X on a curved surface? There are no records of an F.4 starting with W and ending with 84 that was ever at Jever. XE684 was an F4 and was on all 4 Sqns as follows: 98SSqn 29Aug55, 4Sqn 3Oct55, 118Sqn 20Dec55, 93Sqn 18Jan56, 229 OCU 22Mar57, 111 Sqn Reduced to spares, May61. The problem with this record from David Griffin's CD on the Hawker Hunter serial numbers is that it was supposed to have been returned to 229 OCU at Chivenor about 3 months before the Open Day? The aircraft in the photograph is a Hunter F4 as the separate engine combustion chambers confirm it to be an Avon 113 Series. [Click to see why]. [Backlog: 9May10 590 days ] (Click to see.) |

Thanks to Brian Thornton who challenged my wrong identification of a Hunter engine as an Avon203 I have added confirmation that Brian is right! The picture shows an Avon engine on display in Tech Wing for the Open Day on 19Jun57. There was some doubt as to whether this is the 1957 Open Day. [Resolved as 57 - click to see]. In Jun57 4 and 93 Sqns had F.6s and 98 and 118 Sqns still had F.4s. However, the sign on the right corner looks like AVON 115, (Originally I thought it said 203), therefore it is from an F.4. As a result of this uncertainty Brian Thronton challenged me and said "It clearly has a cartridge starter assembly whereas the 203 had the Avpin starter and it has separate combustion chambers whereas the 203 had an annular combustion chamber." This prompted me to research pictures of both engines on the RAF Museum web site and I have added them below the main picture. On the left is the Avon 203 and on the right is the 100 Series Avon. From the clearly separate combustion chambers and the fewer intake struts the displayed engine was a 115 Series from the Hunter F.4. Thank you Brian! [Backlog: 9May10 590 days ] (Click to see.) |

I apologise to shareholders for the appalling lack of service on the web site. I have now retired fully and foolishly took on Chairman of the Chevening Community Led Parish Plan Steering Group. This required me to build and maintain a web site for our activities. (That is at http://www.cheveningplan.org). I also met Spike Feist a Phantom/Tornado navigator who lived in the Cheshire Home at the foot of my garden. Spike is a great character, he is great fun and as sharp as a button though as disabled as Steve Hawking. Again foolishly I agreed to build and maintain a website for the Cheshire Home. (That is at http://www.chipsteadlake.org). In 1980 I founded what is the oldest Home Computer Club in the UK that still meets twice a month at Biggin Hill and I am responsible for maintaining their web site. (That is at http://www.icpug.org.uk/se/index.htm). Apart from the Parish Plan and the Supporters of the Cheshire Home activities, you can see that I have bitten off more than I can chew. I hope to devote all next week (wife permitting!) to trying to catch up a little on the Jever web site backlog. My apologies to all those who have sent me some marvellous material - it will not be lost and I will add it to the site in the order that I received it. I am afraid that I am currently running about 586 days behind the material that I have to put up. I want to go back to work - it was a lot easier than retirement! [Backlog: 9May10 586 days ] |
