102 Sadly due to a lack of numbers who could attend, we had cancelled our room at the RAF Club and instead were going to meet at 12:30 hrs in the Running Horse bar in the club basement.   Thanks to the kindness of the RAF Club, they have let us have the Battle of Britain suite for nothing.   In return we need to tell them what we want to eat off the Running Horse Menu.   We will therefore buy our chosen order for food and drinks over the bar as normal but take it back across the corridor to the Battle of Britain Suite to consume.   There are now 19 attendees!   If you change your minds and can make it come and join us!   If you want food, please tell Mick by Friday morning.   [No Backlog)   (Click to see.)

89 Thanks to Derek Perham added a picture taken after a Boxing Day football match between the UK personnel at Jever.   The Station in those days was centred on the old Primary School, as far as an Admin Unit was concerned, with the majority of those in the photo working at various Communications sites around the Jever/Schortens area, including Sector Control at Brockzetel.   So in total there were probably about 35 of us stationed there at the time, including a Royal Signals Army detachment, with the married quarters in use in Schumacher Strasse, Edert Strasse etc.   Anyone who was single (about 5 of us including myself) had a really rough time being billeted in one of the married quarters!   We were obviously a far flung outpost and the photograph sums up the great Community spirit amongst us at the time.   The 'pitch' was situated at the rear of the NAAFI shop in Schumacher Strasse and a good time was had by all, with a fair amount of the local liquid refreshment being consumed both during and after the game! - 26Dec66.   [Backlog 1May21)   (Click to see.)

67 Thanks to Rev. Marcus Christ added a remarkable story from WWII involving Jever.   The Charlie Brown and Franz Stigler incident occurred on 20 December 1943, when, after a successful bomb run on Bremen, 2nd Lt Charles "Charlie" Brown's B-17 Flying Fortress (named "Ye Olde Pub") was severely damaged by German fighters.   Luftwaffe pilot Franz Stigler had the opportunity to shoot down the crippled bomber but did not do so, and instead escorted it over and past German-occupied territory so as to protect it.   After an extensive search by Brown, the two pilots met each other 50 years later and developed a friendship that lasted until Stigler's death in March 2008.   Brown died only a few months later, in November of the same year.   [Backlog 2Aug20)   (Click to see.)
