Jimmy Talalla. Anthony Hodge says: "I have been trying to pin down the likely time that this photo was taken, and think it might be late June 41, for the following reasons - 1 - the summer landscape in the background. 2 - the identification of a Spitfire Mk11A, by the exhaust port design, spinner and props, and no cannon judging by how close the pilots are to the wings, especially Mallory who looks as if he is leaning just where the canon would be. 3 - RAF records state that 118 did not receive IIB's until July and VB's in September. It is only a guess, but it would be good to find a definite date, if you have it?" Anyone able to help?

- Outside Horsham St Faith Mess, an unknown officer and Bruce, the 118 Squadron dog, who positively and possessively owned the bedroom in the Mess in which he allowed Paddy and me to sleep in. He was completely impartial; some nights he would decide he would lie on top of my legs at. say 3 am, to stop the circulation and give me pins and needles, and next night it would be Paddy's turn. An Irish Wolfhound, he had, as you can see, great long slim legs, which gave him a fair turn of speed; paced behind the old Bedford truck round the peri track, he was clocked at 45 ,mph, and didn't look the least bit stretched. (No, he didn't get airborne; afterburner u/s).

The failure of the taper pins in the winding mechanism which caused this and two previous accidents, will be overcome by Mod. 929, which is being issued this month." Hawker Tempest V: First flown in 1943, the Hawker Tempest V was the fastest and most powerful fighter in the world when it entered RAF service in April 1944. Two months later the Tempest squadrons were assigned to the defence of Great Britain, operating against the V-1 flying bombs which were being launched against London. The Tempest's high speed made it the ideal interceptor in this new role. The Tempest squadrons subsequently moved to the continent with 2nd TAF. It looks as though there is seating on its roof. However, the picture appears to have been taken in the restaurant on the lower right. (Click to compare) Thanks to research by Norman Giffin, the Comet in the top picture is the first civilian jet transport to land at Wahn, now Cologne/Bonn international airport. It is interesting that it is a BOAC Comet and not BEA.

Ken's Painting Restored and Presented to the Officers' Mess GAF Jever
- For those of us who have had the opportunity to visit the Officers Mess at Jever over the last few years will certainly have noticed the painting of the 118 Sqn Hunter that hangs in the corridor leading to the Dining Room. This newspaper report, early 2001?, will give us a little background info on this painting. (Which has already been well photographed by Chris Stone-2005/15 and Pete Jarvis-2006/191)
Translation: "Some 45 years ago the British Air Commodore Ken Goodwin, who served at Jever as a Flt/Lt flying the Hunter Mk.4, had his beloved aircraft painted flying past the squadron hangers by the Jever artist Bruno Albers. After all these years this wonderful oil painting has now been returned to its place of origin, as Air Commodore Goodwin has presented it to the Jagdbombergeschwader 38 'Friesland'. Before it could take an honoured place in the corridor of the Officers' Mess however,Buno Albers once again took possession of his earlier work and restored it. Last weekend he handed over the painting to the Kommodore of the JaboG 38 'F', Oberst Manfred Molitor who was very pleased to receive this historical document. "This is where it really belongs" he said."
- Also hanging on the wall, next to the previous painting of Ken Goodwin's flypast, is a painting from Heinz Knoke which is dated 1987. Heinz Knoke as we know was the author of the book 'I Flew for the Führer' and served at Jever in the early part of the last war. After the war he lived in Schortens, was involved in local politics for a number of years and finally moved away to study at the Osnabrück University. He died in 1993 at the age of 73.
