722 Thanks to the RAF Museum added 93 Sqn Linebook No. 2 - Page 43 Translated says: "Armed Forces Day" Flying the "Hawker Hunters"   The aerobatic team from the 2nd ATAF is making their debut for the year 1957 with their "Hawker Hunters" over Spangdahlem airfield on 18th May.   The air acrobatics team of the 2nd ATAF is made up of pilots from the Royal Air Force 93 Squadron at Jever.   It is the first time that a European audience will see the latest "Hawker Hunter Type Mark VI".   This fighter is the latest version of the "Hunter Mark VI" that the team has used in seven international air displays and seven home air displays.   Unlike most international aerobatic teams of repute, 93 Squadron are able to practice only in their own spare time.   All their holidays and vacations are sacrificed by these pilots in the joy and enthusiasm of achieving such formation flying.   The names of the individual pilots are: H. (Paddy) Minnis, Squadron Commander of 93 Squadron, Richard Clayton, Pilot, Charles Taylor, Pilot, and Brian A. E. Sanderson, Pilot.   The age of the pilots is amazing, the Squadron Leader at 31 is the oldest, the youngest is just 22 years old.   The "Hawker Hunter Aerobatic Team" represents the best in this flight disciplne, along with a few others, that can be admired.   On 18th May you will be able to see them at Spangdahlem airfield and enjoy their mastery of the art of flight against a backdrop of the horizon and the sky!   The caption to the left-hand photo says: Squadron Leader H (Paddy) Minnis and his aerobatic team from 93 Squadron can be seen on 18th May at the Spangdahlem airfield.   The caption to the right-hand photo says: Our picture shows an artistic formation that can be excuted by the 2nd ATAF "Hawker Hunter" aerobatic team.   [No Backlog]   (Click to see.)

E. Sanderson, during the Armed Forces Day show at Spangdahlem AB last Saturday.   Thousands of persons witnessed their brilliant performance which was one of the sparkling highlights of the spectacular AFD exhibition at this Base.   Flying Officer Sanderson, number four man in the Hawker Hunter team, lost his life in the tragic crash of his Hunter Mark VI aircraft Friday afternoon, May 17.   The 23-year-old RAF officer, whose home was in Bulawayo, Southern Rhodesia, joined the RAF in South Africa in 1951.   He had been stationed at Jever Air Base since 1953.   In addition to being a member of No 93 Squadron Jever's Hawker Hunter formation aerobatic team, he was an avid soccer player on the 2nd ATAF soccer team.   Flying Officer Sanderson is survived by his wife of 19 months and one child."   [No Backlog]   (Click to see.)

707 Thanks to the RAF Museum added 93 Sqn Linebook No. 2 - Page 35 The start of 4 pages commemorating the sad occasion when we lost Sandy Sanderson, the No 4 in the Fleche D'Or Squadron and 2 ATAF Formation Aerobatic Team during a practice for a display at the USAF Air Base at Spangdahlen's Armed Forces Open Day.   The accident is described in Colin Cummings excellent book Category Five as follows: "17-May-57 XG258 Hunter F.6 93 Sqn 49 degrees 58' North/06 degrees 38' East 1 Fatality.   The aircraft was one of the squadron aerobatic team and after completing the bomb burst manoeuvre, it rolled off the top and recovered from the ensuing dive.   However, the aircraft then made a straight shallow dive across the airfield and struck the ground.   It seemed probable that the pilot was distracted by conflicting requirements including the need to achieve a synchronised rejoin of formation and he did not realise how close he was to the gound.   Flight Liuetenant Brian Anthony Edmund SANDERSON aged 27."   This is the cover of the programme for the event.   [No Backlog]

601 Video showing CS-08 clip from Chris Stone's video taken at Peter Martin's Wedding in April 1962.   It opens with the guests waiting for the bride and groom outside the hotel where they held the reception.   On the right it looks like John Farley talking to Bob Holiday and on the left of them can be seen Tony Boyle.   Al Pollock is then seen defacing the car windscreen with the words "BOMBER COMMAND".  There are further shots of the guests, then the poor chauffeur is seen trying to remove Al's handiwork from his windscreen!   After more views of guests on the steps of the hotel there is then a shot of Peter Martin's sports car parked further down the drive.   After it is driven up to the reception, Peter in his grey "going away" suit, is seen trying to load his case and bride into the car before too much havoc is wrought on it by the guests.   Al Pollock is hard at work labelling the windscreem "Just Married".   Peter is then seen trying to load their suitcase with some considerable interference.   The bride is then carried to the car and they finally drive off with the usual extras in tow.   Various guests are then seen trying to leave from the reception in their cars.   [No Backlog]   (Click to see.)

596 Thanks to the RAF Museum added 93 Sqn Linebook No. 2 - Page 11 - Teasing the newly qualified IRE, Taff Taylor, who was already a squadron PAI.   The advert for the book read: "YOUR MIND AND HOW TO READ IT - A complete course of self-instruction by W J Ennever, the founder of Pelmanism.   Deals with all essential material details:   concentration, self-confidence, fears, inferiority feelings; etc.   Provides a plan for developing the mind at a fraction of the usual cost."?   The head-on view of Taff undergoing I/F practice teases him that his newly developed skill comes from cheating with one eye on the outside world!   The bottom sketch is a continuation from the previous page comparing the two ex-Master Mariners on the Squadron - the tallest "Birdie" Biggs and the shortest "Goblin" Lynn.   [No Backlog]   (Click to see.)

594 Video showing CS-07 a clip from Chris Stone's film taken at Peter Bouch's wedding on 22nd July 1961 at Treherbet, Rhondda in South Wales.   It opens with Peter Bouch accompanied by Colin Lamont, his Best Man, going up the steps to the church.   Then there is a shot of Peter and Margaret the Bride coming out of the Church again with Colin in attendance.   Peter and Margaret then pose on the steps followed by Peter and Colin.  The next shot shows Marion Stone in light green, next to an Unknown Lady, then Timber Wood and Colin on the steps of the Church.   Peter seems bothered by the confetti on his very smart uniform but he is fighting a losing battle until they get in to the car - a beautifully prepared Mercedes with the necessary accoutrements!   .   They are finally seen driving off to the reception.   [No Backlog]   (Click to see.)

587 Video showing CS-06 a clip from Chris Stone's film taken on 93 Sqn when there was a challenge race between the groundcrew and the aircrew to see who could change an empty ADEN gun pack on the Hunter F.6 for a full gun pack.   The opening scene on the hard standing in front of Hangar 4 shows a group gathered to witness the event: Wg Cdr Nick Bowen (OC Flying); Sqn Ldr Olaf Bergh (OC 93 Sqn), and pilots Jeremy Hall, Timber Wood, Barrie Tonkinson, plus one other pilot (back towards) believed to be John Haig.   There is also an unknown bald-headed gentleman in civvies.   In scene 2 Peter Arthur walks towards the camera.   He is (thankfully!) i/c the pilot team comprising Mick Ryan, Dennis Fahey and John Haig.   In scene 3 The fresh gun packs are wheeled into place and then we see the Pilots team on the starting blocks.   Scene 5 shows a Stop watch (held by Timber Wood) starting, and the race is on - pilots on aircraft 'W', and armourers on aircraft 'R'.   Scene 6 Stop watch at 40 seconds.   Scene 7 Pilot team work frantically!   Stop watch (cannot determine seconds).   Scene 8 Dennis Fahey removes ladder (at last!) - and "Flash" Haig lives up to his nick name!   Scene 9 Armourers appear to calmly finish.   OCFW and OC 93 look on at the pilot's team, as John Haig replaces the final sabrina.   [No Backlog]   (Click to see.)

582 Video showing CS-05 a clip from Chris Stone's film taken when 93 Sqn were working up for the Wing Flypast for the AOC's Inspection - Thu 5May60.   The clip opens with shots of Hunter F.6 A XG272 on the 93 Sqn hardstanding in front of Hangar 4.   There is a close up of Chris Stone's name on the side of his aircraft.   Next there is a shot of Brian Butterworth in 93 Sqn's Operations Room as he walks past Chris Stone reclining on the Ops Desk and then showing Mick Ryan signing for his aircraft.   If this is the right day it was when Mick acted as "Whipper In" to marshal the shape of the flypast.   He did not fly on the actual day of the inspection which was Tuesday 10th May 1960.   Next we see the 93 Sqn Hunters starting up, taxying out and taking off.   There are then several flypasts in four vics of five aircraft each.   It finishes with a single still taken of Chris Stone's low-level aerobatics display.   Hunter F.6 A XG272 1st flt 4Dec56 by David Lockspeiser, delivered 9Jan57 to 5MU, to 2 ATAF 26Mar57, to 93Sqn as A 2Apr57. 578 Video showing CS-04 a clip from Chris Stone's film taken when 93 Sqn were operating from the N.E. dispersals in the woods at the edge of the airfield whilst the concrete areas on the airfield were being repaired - 17Jun60.   It begins with a shot of a Hunter being refuelled in the dispersal then it fades to a clip of Brian Butterworth practicing one of his "silly walks".   Next Barry Tonkinson in his No. 1 uniform arrives and enters the Operations Room caravan.   Then there is a shot of a Hunter landing on the runway and two taxying in to dispersals.   We think this was Jun60 rather than Aug59 as the Hunters have yellow painted wing tips.   [No Backlog]   (Click to see.)

573 Thanks to the RAF Museum added 93 Sqn Linebook No. 2 - Page 7 which covers the period 9Dec56 to 10Sep58.   This page records a MAJOR.   M257BZ.     1 NOVEMBER 1956      CAT.5    Flying Officer J.E. Pigdon of 93 Squadron,   COMMENT Like most motor accidents this appears to have been a head-on collision between two stationary vehicles both on their own side of the road.    Eric did jolly well out of this collecting about twice the actual value of the car from the insurance company.   To all but Eric the car appears to be little more of a wreck than it was before.   The pilot is to be interviewed by his St.t..n C.mm.nd.r.   [No Backlog]   (Click to see.)
572 Video showing CS-03 a clip from Chris Stone's film taken during a 93 Sqn exchange with a Danish Hunter squadron - 11May59.   The clip opens with an early morning shot of the 93 Sqn Hunter line outside hangar 4.   A Swift is seen taking off and then it switches to a shot of Gordon Talbot topping up on a Carlsberg during a NATO exchange visit to Skrydstrup in Denmark.   The shot pans across John Lakeman, an Opel Rekord and a Danish Air Force officer who presumably was hosting them during their visit.   The clip finishes with a pair of Danish Hunters taxying out and then taking off at Jever, shot from the 93 Sqn Ops Room window.   [No Backlog]   (Click to see.)

569 Thanks to the RAF Museum added 93 Sqn Linebook No. 2 - Page 6 which covers the period 9Dec56 to 10Sep58.   This page records an incident in July 1956 when the new Wing Commander Flying "Woody" Woodward was Dined In to the Mess - Page 6.   Gerry Shipley's notes record the following: "I was dined in on the same night as Hammer West's replacement (Vic Woodward). I remember parts of the evening very well, especially when Sandy Sanderson became irritated that the new Wing Commander repeatedly beat him at leg-wrestling. Sandy showed his displeasure by picking Vic up and dropping him on to the anteroom floor from shoulder height.   At this point the Wg Cdr disappeared & there was general displeasure that the new boss should be a wimp; however, he returned about 30 minutes later, having been to sick quarters to get attention for his broken collar bone & complaining about the handicap of now having to drink left-handed.   As a typical 20 year old know-all, I assumed that the Wingco Flying was clearly old, past it & definitely boring.   Not too long ago, I put his name into Google & was surprised to find that he had had a much more interesting history than I'd given him credit for; his achievements include being listed among the RAF BIPLANE aces of WW2."   [No Backlog]   (Click to see.)

566 Video showing CS-01 a clip from Chris Stone's film taken during a 93 Sqn detachment to Sylt for APC Gunnery Camp - Apr/May59.   It starts with a Meteor dropping a target flag over the airfield filmed above a line-up of the Hunter F.6s at Sylt and Chris Stone arrives in XJ645 E and unstraps.   The groundcrew are then seen to change over the ADEN gun packs.   There are no blast deflectors fitted on the four ADEN's and the gun muzzles are surrounded by soot from the cartridges.   In the background a Meteor is seen dropping a flag on the airfield so that the bullet holes can be counted and the pilot given his score.   The clip finishes with an armed gun pack being winched into position.   Note the word "green" written on the fuselage by the Hunter intake.   I suspect this is to indicate the colour of the paint on the bullet tips for this aircraft.   As the bullets passed through the flag they leave a smudge of coloured paint on the flag so that the score can be contributed to the correct aircraft and pilot.   [No Backlog]   (Click to see.)

563 Video showing SAF-01 a clip from the Swedish Air Force's film sent to me by the F8 Wing Association at Barkarby airfield, Stockholm.   This was shot during a visit to Barkarby by the 93 Sqn Fleche d'Or, the official 2ATAF formation aerobatic team and the solo 2ATAF aerobatic pilot Ken Goodwin in Sep57.   The F8 Wing had 60 Hunter Mk.50s from 1956 to 1962.   The clip opens with a flame and then a shot of Paddy Minnis climbing into his Hunter.   The team are then seen taxying out.   Shots from Ken Goodwin's solo aerobatic display with his signature negative G manoeuvres follow.   Then the formation team are seen taking off in box formation.   There are several shots of the team in box and Draken formation.   Spectators are seen outside the hanger and after a few more manoeuvres the team are seen to land in box formation.   After taxying in, Paddy Minnis and Taff Taylor are shown climbing out of their Hunters.   There is then a line up of, left to right, Ken Goodwin, "Clam" Clayton-Jones, Sqn Ldr Paddy Minnis, team leader, Geoff Timms and Taff Taylor.   The final shots are of the team talking to the senior Swedish military hosts.   [No Backlog]   (Click to see.)

558 Thanks to Joe Dible learnt of the sad news of the passing of Flight Lieutenant Brian "Taff" Wallis on Monday 7th October 2013 after a short illness.   The funeral was held on Thursday 10th October 2013.   Taff (who lost his younger brother a long time ago with heart trouble) had had a heart bypass nine years ago and a couple of years ago was lucky to be advised to go straight to a hospital after carotid artery trouble, which otherwise could have been a fatal stroke in a few hours' time.   This time there were complications and then pneumonia - Marie was shocked as the doctors had told her they were optimistic that he would be coming home.   They have two children and three grandchildren.   [No Backlog]   (Click to see.)

382 Thanks to Mamie Sharman I have, at last, begun a tribute page to BeBe Sharman who contributed a so much to the shape and idea of the Jever Steam Laundry and was fun to be with wherever he went.   Bebe was a professional photographer before he took up flying and his 5 albums are a wonderful record of his time with the RAF.  We are very grateful to Mamie for allowing us to load them on the web site.   We begin with Album 2 covering his time as an airman photographer at RAF Luqa, Malta, Nov48 until his flying training at RAF Heany in Northern Rhodesia, Feb51.   [No Backlog]   (Click to see.)

375 Thanks to John Hill added photo of flying wing with Tower, WINCO's Office, Army Major's Office (Intelligence?), Met. 245 Thanks to John Hill added photo of one of the Met instruments outside Flying Wing Headquarters.   It is a Campbell Stokes sunshine recorder and it is manufactured to the British Meteorological Office's specification.   The sphere is made from well-annealed optical glass and the hours the sun shines are recorded onto a card inserted into the base of the recorder.   The cards are marked with hourly intervals.   Two models are available: the choice depends on the latitude at which the recorder is to be used.   Record cards are included for the first year.   Please note there is a waiting period of six months from time of order for this product as the item is carefully made to order.   Today it costs: £1,521.70.   The record cards are made from a special board with a matt turquoise finish on which even weak sunlight produces a clearly visible trace.   They are treated to char rather than burn so that the trace produced by strong sunlight does not spread significantly.   There are three types of card to correspond to the behaviour of the sun at different seasons: long curved for use in summer, straight for use near the equinoxes and short curved for use in winter.   All are marked with hourly intervals and are used to reord the hours of daylight as measured in the "Met Garden".   [Backlog: 1May13 24 days]   (Click to see.)

Captain S.W.R.Hughes warned us all, that if there was any trouble during the week we would get the blame irrespective of who actually caused the bother!   A very tall coloured chap rashly reminded the Group Captain of our rights!!!   The reply, not surprisingly, reminded us that as hired assassins we did not have any rights!   I can laugh at it now but as an eighteen year old it was over my head.   [Backlog: 18Nov12 175 days]   (Click to see.)

117 Marcus Christ tells us that on the weekend of 7/8th July 2012 he met family members of John Henry Waterfall who died after he was shot down in his Wellington bomber R 3236 south of Jever airbase on 7Jul40.   A former firefighter, Heino Dirks, joined the party.   Heino attended the original crash in 1940.   Later Heino was a firefighter in the GSO at RAF Jever and was involved in fighting the flames of the Stadtkirche.   (Click to see.)   He is now 90 years of age and still very fit!   This is a photo of the plaque which was put there just a few days ago.   It was erected by a German as a kind of surprise for the Waterfall family which came over to Jever last weekend.   However, the makeshift memorial has to be removed soon for several reasons.   It was erected by the German Air Force Captain Charlie Pfeifer (ret.) as a kind of surprise for the Waterfall family which came over to Jever last weekend.   However, the makeshift memorial has been removed soon after as it is likely to attract "treasure hunters" who will dig for debris.   Although it has to be removed it is intended to honour the fallen of Wellington R3236 so it will be replaced by five yew trees as proposed by the Forestry Officials.   [Backlog: 11Jul12 295 days]   (Click to see.)

76 Thanks to John Hill added a photo of the Met "Farm" in the foreground and the RAF Jever Signals Square beyond - about 1956.   [Click to see the full explanation of an Air Traffic Control Signals Square.]   JV are RAF Jever's identification letters.   The symbols in the square mean the following: Red square top left-hand corner means "Aerodrome rules are temporarily suspended and that special arrangements are in operation".   This was the normal warning SATCO's used on RAF bases to warn aircraft that they were not welcome without prior clearance.   The H alongside means that there is an area set aside for Helicopter operations.   The red square in the right-hand corner with two yellow bars means land in an emergency only.   Again a protective measure by SATCOs to deter unwanted strangers.   The T just this side of that red square indicates wind from the right and therefore the landing direction is from left to right.   The white dumbell means that you must keep your aircraft on the paved surfaces (again a precaution) and the Red L superimposed means that light aircraft may take off and land on the runway or another designated area.   This area was the grass parallel to the runway.   [Backlog: 22Jun12 292 days]   (Click to see.)

60 Thanks to Bryan Mills added a photo that a German friend of Bryan Mills obtained in a document from the German Air Force in 2004.   The approximate translation is: "Since March 1952 the airbase at Upjever once again provided background noise for the local citizens of the surrounding communities when, from time to time, shrill whistles and howls filled the air causing mixed feelings among the locals.   Usually there was nothing to see that could have caused the noise until the jet fighters were identified as the cause because of their high speed.   In Mar52 4 Sqn Royal Air Force equipped with Vampire FB.5s moved in to Upjever air base.   Only a month later there was the first incident: On Thu 17Apr52 Sgt. J. S. Jones, flying on a simulated rocket attack, in Vampire FB.5 WA141 ran out of fuel and had to make an emergency landing in the eastern outskirts of Oldenburg.   Sgt. Jones was not injured but later disciplined for the incident.   The aircraft was a total write off.   [Cat 5 components]"   Colin Cummings in his book "The Last Take-off" records only that "The aircraft was belly landed after its fuel ran out."   Click to see F540 report.   WA141 arrived on 4 Sqn on Tue 29Aug50.   [Backlog: 16Jun12 291 days ]   (Click to see.)
